Posted: 6/4/12 at 4:00pmI think Ghost is having the three other leads perform because Randolph has already gotten so much praise for her performance and they want to try to prove people wrong and show that the other leads are just as strong. I'm not saying that that's true, but that's probably what they are trying to do.

Realise that this could be like the 2009 awards opening number, which was one of the best we've ever scene and also was a great season in review, and all the seasons shows that were open at the time of the Tonys and even Pal Joey performed...this could be of the same mind set, because there is no way Godspelll and Ghost are getting a full 3 minutes. One Man Two Guvnors songs are extremely repetitive, so 90 seconds would be fine...and you kind of have to let Tracy Bennett stop the show....
Honestly if I had to bet the Opening number is going to be themed "What is Old is New Again":
Superstar and Godspell...stories almost 2000 years old
Follies a show about Old Dieing theater
Porgy and Bess...and opera from 70yrs ago
EVITA about a dictator almost 50yrs ago
Newsies a show about a strike 100yrs ago
Leap of Faith a show about a crappy movie 20yrs ago
Nice Work - Score is over 50 year old set in the 1920s
Ghost aren't dead people old......and from a movie 20yrs ago
Once...music is based on a culture that goes back for over a century
One Man Two Guvnors set in the 1949s also based on a play written over 100yrs ago
End of the Rainbow...Judy Garland at the end of her life
Peter and the Starcatcher set over 100 years ago based on a work written 100 yrs ago

Any news of who will be the surprise guest with
PETER AND THE STARCATCHER?
The only appropriate person I can think of is Mary Martin.

"Leap of Faith a show about a crappy movie 20yrs ago"
If they had used that sentence as a pull quote, the show would still be running today.

Posted: 6/4/12 at 7:35pmI was hoping Bonnie and Clyde would get to briefly perform since Laura Osnes is nominated. I know it isn't nominated for Best Musical, but that hasn't stopped the Tonys lately.

Posted: 6/4/12 at 8:04pmI don't think anyone is going to pay for Bonnie and Clyde to perform. It would be a lot of money for no reason, since I don't think they are doing a tour.

"I'm a little miffed they're letting non-nominated, subpar material perform, but not the lauded, nominated "Venus in Fur". There has to be a scene they could do that would work on TV."
Nothing to be miffed about. They could have offered to Venus In Fur, but the show declined. It costs money to perform on the Tonys. Gotta pay each actor, tech, design element, management, etc.

Posted: 6/9/12 at 9:45pmI was told by one of the Newsies cast members about a week and a half ago that they were doing "Seize the day" and then that "people weren't supposed to know". After, I was talking to Kara though and she said she would be on as well. Unless she was trying to throw me off, maybe they're doing a medley with "King of New York" on as well.

Posted: 6/9/12 at 10:48pmKara recently tweeted that she was only attending the after party not the actual ceremony, so I guess they aren't doing King of New York. I would assume they'll do their usual Seize the Day with the dance break and end with the last verse of Santa Fe to showcase Jeremy.

Posted: 6/9/12 at 10:56pmKara not going?! That seems really odd since the casts for musicals nominated for Best Musical are often in attendance to accept the award with the producers.

If i had to bet Newsies is doing a The World Will Know/Santa Fe/Curtain Call dance break...
And since they moved to the Beacon there is not enough room for all the members of the nominated musicals since most shows now have 15+ producers each gets a +1 so say 30 seats per show per producers of 16 shows=480seats+22 other categories x 5 noms=110x2=220 add in an extra 10 for combined nominations=530 + the 700 voting members x 2 (for the +1)= 1930 seats which is the capacity for the beacon.
For the members who decide not to attend, or they are also double nominees and the other overlaps figure those extra seats go to presenters and A List leads (Stacy Keach, The Entire Cast of The Best Man, RIcky Martin, Matthew Broderick)
If the show were at Radio City the entire cast would be there, since it has triple the capacity.

Posted: 6/9/12 at 11:17pmI spoke to some of the Newsies cast members at the stagedoor the other night and they said they're doing Seize the Day, and I'm going to assume they'll do the Santa Fe ending as well.

Has Ghost confirmed they are doing "Suspend my Disbelief/I Had A Life"? I know that is that obvious choice since all 3 actors are showcased in it...but just though, could they be doing this arrangement of "Here Right Now?" This is from the West End and I'm not sure if it's ever been in the show, but Tony arrangements are not always consistent to the actual show at times.

I would love to see the NEWSIES performance begin with intro of "Once and for All," then go straight into their actual performance number - I think that would send a strong message. And I second the idea of somehow incorporating "King of New York" as well. But like I said, that will more than likely be the show's new slogan/marketing campaign if it wins the Tony.

I understand Newsies wanting to do something choreography based becasue that's their award to lose really, but I'd love them to fit in Once And for All too just because of the lyrics;
There's change coming once and for all
You makes the front page and man, you is major news
Tomorrow they'll see what we are
And sure as a star, we ain't come this far to lose
That said, it could be quite embarassing if the lose later on!
I know someone had said Kara wasn't performing but on the Newsies vids they've been posting, she's leaving the Tony rehearsals in costume.

I think opening with that section would be awesome! When or lose, audiences will no doubt be impressed and it is very poetic in a way in relation to the musical's plot (especially if the win)!
I also saw an older cast member in costume in the NEWSIES videos as well, which leads me to think they are incorporating "Carryin' the Banner" somehow. And yes, Kara is there! So that more than likely means "King of New York" will be utilized in some fashion. I'm even more excited to see their performance now.
