Sheldon, Butz, and Gad all in lead. That category is pretty crazy.
Does anyone else think the producers of Catch Me should have petitioned Norbert down to featured actor? He'd likely have a better shot at a nod (and even win) there. That best actor category is nuts.
I'm surprised that they made no mention of High's eligibility. Does that mean it's eligible?
Although it closed only a few days after its official opening, the new play High, which starred Kathleen Turner, will be eligible for nomination.
That's good news.
Just curious - where does this put Darren Ritchie for Wonderland? Featured, I'm assuming?
Leading Actress in a Play just got a lot smaller. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only eligible women are:
Nina Arianda, BORN YESTERDAY
Cherry Jones, MRS. WARREN'S PROFESSION
Frances McDormand, GOOD PEOPLE
Lily Rabe, THE MERCHANT OF VENICE
Vanessa Redgrave, DRIVING MISS DAISY
Hannah Yelland, BRIEF ENCOUNTER
ALSO:
Sally Hawkins, MRS. WARREN'S PROFESSION
Kathleen Turner, HIGH

^Yup. Where he should be.
Ljay, was that on playbill? I didn't read their article yet.
Theatreguy, since HIGH is eligible, Kathleen Turner fits in there as well.
And Sally Hawkins was leading for Mrs. Warren's as well, yes?

With all those men lumped into Leading Actor in a musical, my fear is that Nick Adams will be showing up in Featured. Ugh. What a mistake !
Also it was NOT wise for the producers of War Horse to petition Seth Numrich into Leading. He had a good shot in the featured category. But he stands no chance of a nomination against the likes of Joe Mantello, Mark Rylance x 2, Robin Williams, James Earl Jones, Al Pacino, and Brian Bedford.
Thanks Jordan, that bit about High still being eligible wasn't there when Playbill first put the story up. And Sally Hawkins wasn't on the list from the In Contention thread (which is where I got the other women), but I just checked and she wasn't put in Featured.
Trish, I don't necessarily think that's true. As of right now, I'd say the 5 frontrunners there are Joel Grey, John Laroquette, Tom Wopat, Chester Gregory, and Rory O'Malley. And I'd say Adam Godley is on deck before Nick Adams.

Ah, I forgot Chester. Though i didn't care for his performance, the critics seemed to like him.
Hang it all! I was hoping Colin Donnell would be nominated (and win) for Featured Actor. Now that he's considered Leading, I expect he'll get lost in the shuffle unless "Anything Goes" pulls off a complete sweep of the nominations.
With Butz and both of the BOOK OF MORMON men placed in the Leading Actor category, I think Aaron Tveit just lost any shot at a nomination.
Wait...does this mean Victoria Clark is in Leading Actress? Interesting.
I honestly can't believe Tveit is actually looking like he's going to get left out. I mean, REALLY? After seeing the show, I thought without a doubt he was the clear front runner. So unfortunate.

Is it just me, or are a lot of these decisions very strange this year?
Definitely WAY too many people in Leading Actor/Musical. Donnell had a good chance of a nom in featured, and Sheldon, Butz or Gad could've won there. Shame. Aaron will be lost in the shuffle, unfortunately.
Meanwhile, the award for featured actor in a musical goes to Rory O'Malley...

No, both Miller and Clark are below the title. Only Miller was petitioned to leading.
Oh, I thought they were both above the title. My mistake. I missed the paragraph about Miller, so I got confused.

Is Bedford above the title?
Is he elligible as leading or featured?
Does anyone know exactly how the "petitioning" works?
I'm pretty sure they don't take a clipboard around asking "Would you sign this petition to put Joel Gray in the featured actor category?"
Do the producers just submit a list of where they want the actors considered?
Thanks

And to add to this question- even when the producers do petition, the Tony Awards Committee has the final say, right? So, for example, the Catch Me producers could have petitioned to have Butz put in featured, and been overruled by the committee, so the end result would just be "All other decisions were consistent with the opening night credits" verbiage?
