Of course he's eligible. It's a different medium. Anthony Quinn in ZORBA, Lainie Kazan in MY FAVORITE YEAR, and Topol in FIDDLER come to mind.
So what do we think the Featured in a Play lineups will be? Those seem wide open now with lots of room for surprise depending on how the nominators feel.

Well I was actually predicting the same featured actor lineup as Outer Critics, Austin Pendleton, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Brandon J. Dirden, Michael Obelholtzer, and Chuck Cooper who I think is gonna win. Now with the Take Me Out ruling I’m less certain though. I’m thinking Ferguson is the safest, but I could see any of those four men in the lineup. I might swap out Obelholtzer for Williams.
Featured Actress I’m way less sure about. I think Kenita Miller’s winning, though I’m far from certain, and her show’s closing certainly doesn’t help, though I think it won’t hurt much. I’m guessing Johanna Day makes it, as does Uzo Aduba. I recently started predicting Phylicia Rashad, though I’m still unsure if her Cosby comments cost her the necessary votes. I could see Rachel Dratch and/or Julie White making it, but for now I have Jessica Frances Dukes.

Lock for a nomination or for a win? I think she'd be very likely to be nominated in either, but IDK about her chances of winning. Right now, my guess for lead actress noms by order of likelihood to be nominated is
1. Mary-Louise Parker
2. Dierdre O'Connell
3. Gabby Beans
4. Ruth Negga
5. LaChanze.
With Emily Davis and Sarah Jessica Parker as other potential nominees.

I know! It's so tough! It could go so many ways. Featured Actor, in particular, has something like 50 eligible actors, and very little in the way of obvious frontrunners. Featured Actress isn't far behind in that regard. Here's my best guess for right now:
Featured Actress:
--Johanna Day
--Jessica Frances Dukes
--Kenita Miller
--Rachel Dratch?
--Kara Young OR Uzo Aduba - probably not both, unfortunately
Featured Actor:
--Alfie Allen
--Ron Cephas Jones
--Chuck Cooper
--Austin Pendleton
--Jesse Williams
I guess this is also partly influenced by my personal preferences, though I did depart from my picks in a few cases on the lists above.

I know he’s supposed to be the main guy, but it is enough of an ensemble effort that this placement is valid? I know when Daniel Sunjata did the role he was nominated at the Tonys as a featured actor while Drama Desk and Outer Critics had him up as a lead. Muddying up my view is Patrick J. Adams was also talked about as potentially going lead for this production and was nominated in that category by Outer Critics Circle."
I feel like generally speaking they tried to leave folks in featured when they could this year. Could have certainly argued they could have been leading, as well as Alfie Allen in Hangmen, Darren Criss in American Buffalo, Noah Reid in The Minutes and could even make an argument for Julie White in POTUS. I mostly agree with the placements, just seems like that was the trend this year that, for the most part, the ones that could go either way all ended up landing in featured.

I meant lock for a nomination. But I think that she would have been a very likely win in Featured. Now she is in Lead, I don't think a nom is guaranteed (although likely), and a win pretty much not gonna happen.
Featured is so wide open that someone like Gabe Ebert or Priscilla Lopez could even get in. Or someone who "could win" doesn't even get nominated.
I don't think most of us predicted 5 Acting nominations for CAROUSEL in 2018...
