Find Your Grail

After having listened to 'Find Your Grail'and not having seen the show, Why does Lady of the Lake sing the way she does??? Is she supposed to sound like a big gospel singer of African American descent or is that an acting choice???
Just Curious.

re: Find Your Grail

It's supposed to be making fun of the singers who over-dramatize and over-trill like that (a la Mariah, Whitney, etc.) It's funnier on stage than it appears on the recording - I was wondering that as well. re: Find Your Grail

re: Find Your Grail

I saw it on the TONY's and I have to admit...

not funny, and NOT IMPRESSED!

Perhaps it is better in the whole context of the show, but it left me thinking why are we giving Sara Ramirez an award???

(No, bare_nakedlady, but even in the whole context of the show, I was still left wondering why we were giving Sara an award. And I still thought she was fine in the show. But Tony-worthy? Please.)

re: Find Your Grail

Sara was great, but she was the only nominee I actually saw live, so I can't say she deserved the Tony over anyone else... I still found her to be really really really funny on stage and she's a great singer.

re: Find Your Grail

She is very entertaining and I suppose that counts for something. She can sing the hell out of a song and it is impressive, and in "Find Your Grail" she spoofs many famous voices, as was already said well here. Did she deserve a Tony, I say no, My vote went to Miss Gettlfinger (Did I spell that right?) for "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" who was just a HOOT in "Oklahoma" and "Ruprecht", She was a show stopper for me!

re: Find Your Grail

I saw the show first in August with understudy Jenny Hill as the Lady of the Lake. She was fine, good voice and very funny. But I didn't see how someone could win a Tony for this until I saw Sara do it a few weeks ago. I couldn't say exactly what she did differently from her understudy, but she just brought something special to the part that really made it stand out even though she doesn't have nearly as much stage time as her co-stars.

As far as the Tony goes, I thought all of the nominees were really outstanding and I would've been happy with any one of them winning. Sara did have the advantage, though, of being in the big hit of the season.

re: Find Your Grail

I'll say it again.

Please pass over the Tony to Kelli O'hara. A COMPLEX performance with layers, and emotions.

That's the thing with awards, ljay. How do you compare a great dramatic performance with a great comedic performance?

I found my Grail but it wasn't in the Piazza, It was in OKLAHOMA!

re: Find Your Grail

I love how every thread becomes a Sara bashing thread eventually....

She was marvelous when I saw the show, absolutely walked away with it. Her "Find your grail" was thrilling to see live (and in the context of the show, it does make sense...as much as anything can make sense in a Python-based show)

She's a stunning performer. And she won the Tony. Not saying there weren't other deserving performers, but she won it. Let it go...Don't be like the cranky Wicked vs Avenue Q fans:)

There's always room for pathos - and jazz hands.

Your statement reminded me of Elaine Stritch's acceptance speech at the Emmy's: "And to my fellow nominees: I won! You didn't win, I won! I need a drink!" Or something to that effect. It was hilarious.

I heart Elaine in any context ever. She's the greatest.

re: Find Your Grail

Oh, quit your whining...

Sara deserved the Tony. She had two of the funniest songs in the show ("The Song That Goes Like This," and "Whatever Happened to My Part?"), and she was totally hilarious. It's a small part (as we're reminded in Act 2 several times), but it's the funniest role in the show.

re: Find Your Grail

As I recall Sara was sick at the Tony's. I felt she gave an amazing performance even for being sick. That girl can sing like none other and definatly deserved the Tony.

re: Find Your Grail

Glad to see some Sara supporters for a change. As was stated before, she made a nothing role, the role you leave the show talking about, pretty good considering the company she is in. As far as it being a small role, well it is the featured category. I remember Jane Krakowski winning for Nine and I didn't think she was in it much either. I think the Call from the Vatican pretty much locked it for her, and that is only one song.

Sara's fine, leave the poor girl alone already!! I think 4 months after the awards show is plenty of time to get the whining out of everyone's sytems! re: Find Your Grail

re: Find Your Grail

Perhaps there has been a misunderstanding. I think that Sara is a good performer. I just don't understand why she won. You can ask that question without hating her as a performer.

In this thread I'm talking about 'Find Your Grail' specifically. I don't think its funny. That's just me.

re: Find Your Grail

clarification: Actually the chcaracter Jane Krakowski played (Carla) is a pretty big part. She has two amazing songs (Call from the Vatican and Simple), some major scenes (Gudio's present) and many small on off scenes. Carla is the second biggest female role in that show.

re: Find Your Grail

Grail isn't one of the funnier songs from the show. They picked a song that showcased the most people. It also didn't work as well on the Tonys as the set up part was screwed up a bit and then the slow motion effect looked horrible at Radio City. Looked like strobe lights.
As far as Jane K part, maybe it was bigger than I remember. It was awhile ago. I did feel she deserved the Tony though.

re: Find Your Grail

I agree with theatreguy on this one. It's SO hard to compare a dramatic actor with comedian for awards. However, I do believe in the saying "dying is easy, comedy's hard", So I will usually go with the funny one. As amazing as a dramatic show can be, it doesn't leave me with the same rush when I leave as a comedy. With a comedy, I almost dread the ending, whereas drama can be sufficient in it's 2 hours. I dunno, I just think Sara deserved it, because she pulled off Python humor exremely well. Just my opinion.
I hold a degree in Musical Theatre from Montclair State University. It is useless. Now I'm funny for money. Oh, and I sing.
