I'm a New York City virgin. I've been dreaming of going since I was 5. I'm going the 19th of November and I was looking for things to do. I do not want to do the typical touristy things (Statue of Liberty) and I really want to do something fun. Of course I am going to see a play but there are so many to choose from. I want to see either RENT or WICKED (but I think my friend wants to see "The women in white").
So could ya'll give me suggestions of FUN and non touristy things to do, and suggestions of plays to see for a first timer??? thanks sooo much!

Well, for one thing, W*cked is out of the list unless you try the lotto, whick would take a miracle to happen.
Defifnetly see THE WOMAN IN WHITE. I'm seeing it on December 11th, and saw it in London and liked it a lot. Of course, it's not a very lively show. See it anyway.
The obvious: The Light in the Piazza, if you're willing to try something romantic and adult (and precoious kid!) However, you might be bored by that, so...
Overall, see THE WOMAN IN WHITE.

Posted: 11/6/05 at 12:46amI'm just going to pimp out Hairspray, like I do with every single person going to NY for the first time. It's a great show, and the lotto is not at all hard to win (I myself have never once lost it).

Posted: 11/6/05 at 1:04amWhat's fun for you? There are so many things to do here. To just get to know the city a little, nothing beats walking around wherever you happen to be - Greenwich Village is very attractive, of course, but almost any neighborhood has dozens of interesting little shops and restaurants.

You should really plan a trip to new york very far in advance so you can get the best seats to the shows.
For example: the best wicked tickets right now can be found in late may and june so that tells you how far in advance you should plan.
Uggh....Remember the days when you had to get tickets like 2 yeas in advance for Lion King? I Do

Posted: 11/6/05 at 1:41amIf it's your first time in NY, don't avoid all the touristy things. Take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry. It's free and it passes by the Statue of Liberty (worth a peek even from a distance) and Ellis Island. You'll also get a beautiful view of the NYC skyline. Get right back on the next ferry for the return trip and you'll even be back for a matinee! Or stop off in Greenwich Village or SoHo after you return to browse and shop.

Wicked is hard to get tickets too now days, but if you do it's worth it!
I love, RENT, so naturally i'm going to suggest it. It's a fun show, with energizing rock music, with an excellent moral.
..and THE WOMEN IN WHITE has Sutton Foster in it from what i understand, and wow, she's just amazing. But this show is not as energenic as RENT.

The first time I came, I didn't want to do the touristy stuff either, but I hated to miss out, so I did 2 hours of touristy stuff. We went on one of the boat tours. It was pretty cool. We did it the lasst day. It gave my friends time to nurse hangovers...lol. There is also a tour from the top observation deck of the Rockefeller Plaza. I just think it is fun to take in the touristy stuff, but very compacted...lol.
And I agree about Hairspray. It's pretty easy to win and a very cute show.

Posted: 11/6/05 at 11:10amI saw The Woman in White last night. Sutton Foster is not in it. I don't know where that came from. I would see Sweeney Todd, since that is a production likely not to tour.

Posted: 11/6/05 at 11:14amI would really recommend spending at least a few hours doing the silly touristy stuff. Everyone should see it once.

Posted: 11/6/05 at 12:31pmAgreed! Make it a well-rounded vacation. Maybe a quick visit to a museum. Trekking through Central Park and a walk down Fifth Avenue, ducking into a few stores and St. Patrick's Cathedral. It doesn't have to take a lot of time and you'll be glad you did something more than just seeing shows.

Posted: 11/6/05 at 1:41pmYou can always try the Avenue Q lottery, that's also very easy to win... but I recommend you to go on a tuesday or wednesday.
re: First Time to New York#16
Posted: 11/6/05 at 2:23pmAvenue Q is easy to win? They only pick names for 12 seats and every time i've witnessed it, there has been 25-35 people there. I consider it the hardest lottery to win due to the amount of seats up for grabs.

go to the Top Of The Rock---top of Rockefeller Center. it JUST re-openned, and rivals the Empire State building. it's cheaper AND right now they are offering 1/2 of tickets.
i went this weekend with a bunch a NYC first timer friends. it was a highlight!
