First Trip to NYC!! Dolly Q

Hey everyone!

So, I'm making my long-awaited first trip to NY the week after next. I couldn't be more excited! I have all my tickets except Saturday night. I had wanted to see Dolly but tickets have been sold out for ages. Dolly holds a special place in my heart since it was the first show I was in in high school. My Q is, has anyone had any luck with the ticket broker sites and should I just bite the bullet and pay? $350+ for balcony seats... I wish I could get closer but don't have 1-2gs to spend. Thoughts? Tips? I've also read threads on SRO, but I've never stood for a show ever. Do you notice or is it more like standing at a concert?

Anyway, glad to be here. Can't wait to finally get myself to the Broadway! :)

I'd try cancellation line or check those resale sites on the day of the performance. Make sure you know where the stubhub last minute ticket pickup area is (it's a 5-7 minute walk from the Shubert theater.)

I saw Dolly a couple weeks ago and while I was waiting in line at the theater to pick up my tickets, two other groups attempted to purchase tickets for that same night and laughed at the premium price of the seats (around 500 I think?) and the box office people told them both to come back after 5:30 to check for cancellations.

Standing room might also be an option for you.

Hey Matt.   If you're looking for Sat. 5/6, I have an extra ticket for the 8pm show.  Center Orch Row P Seat 106.   Asking face value of $189 plus fees.   Just reply to this message if it works for you.   Mark.

Hey Mark, so kind of you! I'm actually in town the following weekend.

I'd keep checking Telecharge leading up to the night you want to see it. Saturday night might be tough, but individual tickets pop up now and then. For example, I had been stalking the month of April for a while on Telecharge, it was always showing as sold out, and then randomly one day I tried again and got an Orchestra Row L seat (at "normal" price) for a performance a couple of days later - it looked like maybe 15 seats had been released for the upcoming week. You never know!

I agree to keep checking Telecharge.  I don't know about Dolly tickets, but I kept watch on Ticketmaster for a Hamilton ticket when an extra family member decided to join our trip.  A couple of premium seats popped up on the site three days before the show.  Granted, they were ridiculously expensive, but so were all the seats available on Stubhub, and they weren't as good as the Ticketmaster premium seats.

I saw Dolly last weekend from the mezzanine.  I wouldn't pay $350 for a balcony seat--the mezz and balcony are very high up in that theater.

Thanks for the advice! And thank you as well JudyDenmark! I wondered if the balcony was way high up; it looked that way from pictures I had seen.

I'll keep checking telecharge until the day of. My feelings are if the balcony is that far up and away, I may kick myself for spending 400x2. Where I could have just saved the $. Plus I'm still seeing 5 other shows, so I cannot complain. Just would have loved to see Dolly too! :)

For what it's worth, my last-minute Orchestra Row L was $229, which I think is the normal Telecharge price on that seat. There were a few available in the same batch at $189 as well, just not as good seats. I don't know that I'd pay absurd resale or premium prices, but I think $229 was a worthwhile splurge for the quality of this show.

Oh, I totally agree. I'd pay 189 or 230 for a decent seat in the orchestra. Just not 800+ for one on stubhub or tickpick. This NY trip is special, but when it  gets to that high price, my sensible "that's 3 months of car payments" brain takes over! Lol

That is my standard operating procedure and I almost always get a ticket. That said, Dolly is that Hamilton-like hit that can easily sell a seat way over face value and that means that there is incentive to not put cancellations or house seats in the system but sell them for extra $$. That;s illegal, but when there is huge market demand it happens.

All that to say this - have a backup plan for Saturday night. There is an embarrassment of riches on Broadway so you won't be disappointed.

Very true, thank you! Have back up plans. I read somewhere on these boards about a "4 day rule." Not sure if it only applies to DEH. But I checked for Dolly tickets this morning on telecharge for this Saturday and they had 2 orchestra seats available for $500 each. Crazy! But if that happens for next Saturday as well, I might just bite the bullet and get them! Figure out paying rent later. ??
