God I can't stop laughing, every time I see or hear (or think of) that great number from Wonderful Town that they did on the Tonys. Sssstep up! Get Hep! Get Hep!
Donna Murphy in Character was so much better than I could have imagined her. I'd only seen her do dramatic things, and I was amazed to see that her character/comic timing is incredible. and the vocals...that great impression of Louis Armstrong...so friggin funny!
Amen to that! The thing I love most about the new cast recording for "Wonderful Town" is that her presence translates exceptionally well: her performance on the CD is magnetic (I eve think I like "Ohio" now!) The recording, in general, is awesome, and I've been recommending it to anybody who'll listen.
Get thee to the Hirschfeld! Or (at least) buy the CD!
it's GET HIP! GET HIP!
Fishhhh! Gesundheit! Thanks! You're Welcome! It's nothing!

I beg to differ - she pronounces it "Get HEP" which was a term used in that time period.
I can't be the only one to have ever heard the expression "Hep cat" as in "he's a real Hep cat!"
Oh, geez... I thought you were joking!
Thank you - I thought I was temporarily losing what little is left of my mind...
Isn't it
Fish!
Gesundheit!
Thanks!
It's noted! or is it
It's nothing!
It's nothing.
(Same thing that Frank Lippencott says after his coughing fit in "Conversation Piece").
That song was so pointless and wierd, I forgot I was watching the Tony Awards for a second. It was just stupid!
It's not pointless. It's the moment where Ruth finally gets to let lose.
Plus, if we got rid of every seemingly "pointless" dance number, then Broadway would be pretty boring.

Actually, it's a wonderful piece of physical comedy and writing, but I would imagine the humor of the transformation of Ruth into a "hepcat" during the number is lost on someone without a point of reference. If you don't know why it's funny, it's not funny. But take it from me...it's funny.
Red...No!
Green...No!
Yes, its incredibly funny to watch her transformation. I actually got yelled at by a friend when we walked by the theater for WT the other day because when I saw the marquee I couldn't help it. I started going "step up, step up to the Village Vortex. Home of the new jazz rage- swing!" Such a fun number. I think she was just afraid I would go into the full number on the street or something...
It wasn't bad, but watching that clip just made me feel like I was missing and inside joke or something. Is there anything I might have been missing behind the song, nix the ere language?
In essense you were. Its a great song in context of the show when you see that Ruth is known for being "inhibited" and "repressed" which is why her transformation from "square" to "hep" is great in that song.
It's funny, but I've never seen the show, and before the Tony telecast, I had only heard two songs from it (Ohio and A little Bit in Love) but I immediately "got it"...I had no trouble figuring out what's going on. Now I can't wait to see the show in it's entirety.
Why does she say "Fish" and then the cast responds with "Gesundheit"?? Does "Fish" mean something else?
One of the most annoying songs ever and now it's stuck in my head!!! thanks!!!! :@
I think they say Gesundheit because "Fish" sounds like a sneeze... unless I'm missing something...
That's what I thought too but I had the same question
