Fair play Bob,I agre actually with you on Avenue Q and Billy Elliot. Never seen la Cage or Promises...hopefully in NYC later in the year. I liked Sweet Charity but wouldnt rush to see another production. Funny id put Sister Act and Hairspray in the same column, except for me Hairspray was the better show. As you said before, interesting what differnet people like

Yes, Princeton, it is interesting what different people like. To me Sister Act is about a hundred classes better than Hairpsray lol. I am not even a fan of the Sister Act movie but I loved the show - I thought the book was genuinely witty and the score was full of great songs (but then I am a huge fan of Alan Menken in general). The problem I have with the Hairpsray score is partly that it's just not my kind of music at all but also that the score was SO one-toned and monotonous, no variation in style or variation in dramatic or emotional intensity and certainly none of the songs develop character or plot - whereas the SA score is VERY varied musically, dramatically and emotionally and is full of character-based songs, etc, as well as the big crowd-pleasers.

Regarding Sweet Charity, to me it is one of the all-time great musicals, one of Cy Coleman's masterworks (and he wrote a huge number of fantastic scores), full of vintage musical theatre "standards". I didn't see the recent West End transfer but did see it at the Choc Factory and it was simply stunning.

bob8rich, have you heard "I Know Where I've Been"!? xD

Yes, I heard I Know Where I've Been - I suffered through the entire score when I saw the show. Actually that was the song I hated the most. LOL

I admire SADM sticking his neck out and sticking up for a show he enjoyed, which is cool.

But this show is going into the West End space now, where quality is everything and has to be good enough for a West End audience, this is no longer a try out on some minor circuit fringe stage.

"this show is going into the West End space now, where quality is everything and has to be good enough for a West End audience"

Quality is everything? Three words alone argue against that premise - LOVE NEVER DIES. So clearly a West End audience is easily pleased. LOL

Seriously, I've seen many shows in the West End over the years where quality has certainly been lacking.

"I need to lay down somewhere dark after all those garish posters looking at me"

Is the beauteous Footloose Broadway artwork not garish enough for you Mama?

lolol first there aint nowt like stating the obvious Phantom
Second the word quality and West End dont really go together anymore
third, im pretty sure Flashdance was never in a tiny fringe space, in fact all the venues it played before transfering to London were BIGGER than the one its going too.

Mamma the Footloose Broadway artwork (like their production) was garish. I never understood what the hell they were thinking. The West End's production and art work are far better. Actually i really liked the first UK tour artwork the best

I have to say Bob you loose me on ur hatred for Hairspray, i think the score is great and reflects the era in a perfect way. However Sister Act on the other hand had one of the worst new scores ive heard in a long time.

Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna

Sorry, SADM, we will have to agree to disagree on this one. I guess it's down to my taste in music - I just hated every second of the Hairpsray score, it literally made me want to scream. (As I've mentioned in another thread, it's only one of 6 shows I've ever seen in 40 years that I 100% detested from start to finish.) I just can't stomach that kind of repetitive whining, though I accept that some people enjoy that kind of music. It's just not "me". And I love every song in the Sister Act score (in fact find it hard to believe anyone could dislike it LOL)- so strong in melody and Slater's lyrics are terrific (can't believe he's the same guy who wrote the dross in LND.)

lololololol

SADM, you saw straight through me, you guessed straight away I was having a bit of sport with you

Bob, I too cannot see why you did not like Hairspray, but horses for courses, thats what makes theatre so subjective, I would say both Hairspray and Billy Elliot are the most loved shows by this board?

Strange you should mention La Cage. I saw the production at the Choc Factory for the first time on a Sunday afternoon, having just seen Hairspray the previous night. And I remember thinking about ten minutes into the show that there had been more genuine wit in just that ten minutes than in the entire two and a half hours of Hairspray's forced and cheap "humour". And the more I think of it, I think hated the Hairpsray book even more than I hated the score.

Of course, both shows have guys dressed up as women LOL - but to me that's where the comparison ends. LCAF is slick, sophisticated, hilariously funny while also being extremely touching and is full of oustanding songs. While (again obviously just my opinion) Hairpsray is tacky, boring, not even remotely funny, pretentious and full of songs that all the sound the same and are so melodically repetitive they drive me crazy LOL.)

I thought Flashdance was much better (on tour) than I ever would have expected it to be.

Infinitely better than the stage version of Footloose.

I was impressed by Flashdance when I saw it on tour too. I've seen both Footloose and Fame and wasn't impressed with either and I pretty much expected the same thing from Flashdance. I actually rather enjoyed it, and would be interested in seeing it again.

Oh, and I don't like Hairspray either. I saw it twice just to be sure and to see if it would be better with a different cast (original London and tour in Cardiff) and my opinion didn't change.
