Found a few of these on YouTube:
Candide, conducted by Leonard Bernstein (brilliant)

Gypsy, conducted by John Williams (at over 5 minutes, it's a little slow, but it sure milks the damn thing for all it's worth and more!)

and my favorite piece, not an overture, but the Sacrifical Dance from Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, conducted by Hiroyuki Iwaki.

Posted: 4/15/08 at 9:10pmThanks, Yank. I could watch Lenny conduct forever--his own music, Beethoven, Mahler, Wagner...anything.

Nail me on the cross, but given a choice between the two, I'll take CANDIDE's overture over GYPSY any day.
It's thanks to my former college director (multiple Tony nominee, Barbara Damashek) that I really came to appreciate CANDIDE for what it was. One of the most perfectly-composed musical/opera pieces of the 20th century.
In a different vein GGAARGH! if only I was a member of TDF! Dammit! Someday I'll qualify... until then, I need to pass as a senior-citizen! I must see it at the NYCO now, please? It was on a papering-service last week but I doubt it'll be again (given the word-of-mouth).

Anyone else love the South Pacific Overture? This link isn't the full overture, having trouble finding it - anyone have the full overture somewhere?

I couldn't get through the Candide overture. The video and the audio are not in sync! Pretty disappointing.

Posted: 4/21/08 at 2:35pmThe only full recordings of the Overture to SOUTH PACIFIC that I know of are the complete score on JAY Records and the R&H overtures with John Mauceri and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.

Posted: 4/21/08 at 3:19pmThis reminds me, does anyone know of a certain track that begins with the Gypsy overture and then combines other famous overtures/openings (Carousel and Sweeney Todd are the only ones I can recall). I figured overture enthusiasts could guide me!
