I don't really know much about the show, but I didn't think that Dancin' was a Fosse tribute. I may be wrong, but I thought it was an original revue that Fosse staged. Can someone clarify, please?
Whatever it is, I'm excited for it because what I do know of the show (the songs performed on the dvd of Fosse) looks pretty good.
so excited for Dancin'!!
Ooo....really interested to see what Sam Gold does with Look Back in Anger.
LOOK BACK is such an obvious choice, tho. Why not some of Osborne's other plays like INADMISSABLE EVIDENCE or LUTHER?
I saw a production of Look Back in Anger about a year ago in the UK and absolutely hated it - not the production, the play.
I know it's an icon of the modern English theatre but it played as an endless (over three hours) self-indulgent rant. Jimmy Porter has to be the most unsympathetic leading man role in the repertory - a whining, self-pitying bully who spends the entire play blaming everyone else for his life. The women who seem to care about him just look pathetic. Really it was unbearable.
It was John Osborne's first play and it felt like he was teaching himself how to write. His later works, particularly The Entertainer, are so much better.

Look Back In Anger is a pretty astonishing play when done well. They better pick their Jimmy Porter VERY carefully...
They'll never get him, but Liev Schreiber would be divine.
Tribute? Possibly a tribute to the mans talent, but I thought Fosse was a tribute. Dancin! was a full-fledged, thrilling show that I saw twice and would never consider comparing the two. It's like comparing apples and oranges...no, oranges and clementines.

Well, Dancin' WAS that until Roundabout got their hands on it. But isn't that the way with all their productions?
Maybe he's not "starry" enough, but I think Thomas Sadoski would make a fine Jimmy Porter. Although I wouln't say no to Liev Schreiber either... at all.
I saw what was probably the first national tour of "Dancin'" and I wasn't as thrilled with it as I had hoped to be. I was younger then (Now I need to hear Pacific Overtures) and wasn't really familiar with Fosse's work. I just knew I was supposed to see the show. Maybe I will appreciate it more now.

It's definitely a risky programming choice. It doesn't have the crowd pleasers that FOSSE had. But for a company producing revivals, it's certainly an interesting revival to do.

DANCIN' picks some lesser-known Fosse dances. I saw the original production and was bored by much of it. At least FOSSE had bright pieces like "Hey Big Spender", DANCIN' has dreary things like "Mr Bojangles".
I'll skip this one.
You do know that Jimmy Porter and the other four main characters are supposed to be 25 years old? I believe Sadoski is 34 and Liev is 43? Think Adam Driver.
Although I will say back in the day Liev would have been a HELL of a Jimmy. Let's just pray they keep Zoe Kazan far away from this.

I've always seen Jimmy as older... Really?
Safe and boring, Roundabout. AGAIN.
Just checked my script and it says 25... I would be curious if there has been a well known production that cast it that young. Personally, I think it would make it all the more tragic seeing these kids who have gotten married waaay too young and are still so unsure to most things in the world barrelling their way, violently through the play trying to make sense of their unhappiness. This is one of my all time favorite plays and with all due respect to Sam Gold, who is fantastic and I can't wait to see his take, but this play all comes down to casting. If they get four great young actors than good lord will that play scorch. Here's hoping.
