I'm afraid our beloved Brendan Stryker dissed FG on the avatar thread on the off topic board.
Next to "Gypsy", my all time favorite overture ever! However, have you actually seen the show? Unfortunately it's not very good. This was truly an example of a star surpassing the material. A great score for a great leading lady though. The movie was actually better than the stage production and an excellent film showcase for the then young Streisand's amazing talents. Her association with the show was so strong that it actually ran a year without her. Had it opened with her replacement,Mimi Hines,I doubt it would have had a run at all. The worst offender without a doubt were the Ziegfeld production numbers in the Broadway stage version which were totally done on the cheap and certainly looked it. There was no semblance of the opulence that historically were key to the "Follies". As discussed in other posts on this subject, I doubt any producers would now touch a revival of this vehicle. It was tried a number of years ago and closed abruptly out of town. Granted, Debbie (Debra) Gibson couldn't compete with her predesessor but the show is creaky and definitely a show of its time (much like "Mame"). Go rent the movie.
Hello, Gorgeous!!!
Now THIS is a thread. :)
Someone needs to get cracking to bring it back to Broadway.
Instead of just kicking me, why don't they give me a lift?
It must be a plot! Cause they're scared that I got such a gift.
Well, I'm miffed!
Cause I'm the greatest star..... I am by far! But no one knows it.

I know there have GOT to be more than 10 FG fans.
MOST EMBARASSING FG MOMENT: me and my friends were renting the movie last year and we brought it to the front desk. There was a group of thugs behind us, so we tried to be inconspicuous. little did we know that the serial code was ripped off and into the microphone, in front of everyone at the store, you just hear. "Mike? Could you check the price for Funny Girl?" I was laughing so hard.
But yes, I love this movie. It makes me want to buy a tugboat.
Like the show, love Babs in the movie.
Parks, your icon is too funny! If its what you were aiming for, it resembles Idina LOL.
One of my favorite shows!!
FINALLY. A thread for us Jewish Broadway nerds.
Amazing show/movie.
Such amazing songs and obviously the talented Striesand is perfection.
When he comes, I tell him

Kid my heart 'aint made of marble,
but your rhythm's really *harrible*
Funny Girl also has the BEST rhymes!
I liked (in the movie) when they're having drinks on the boat and she spits her's out. Barbra is quite good at the spit-takes.
My favorite song from the show that is not in the movie is: Cornet Man
My favorite song from the movie that was not in the show: I'd Rather Be Blue Over You (Than Happy With Somebody Else)
Oddly enough, as I was posting this, Barbra was winging "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" on the radio.

Don't know the show, but love the movie. "I'm the Greatest Star" is my favorite song, I actually adopted it as a sort of personal anthem in high school. What a strabge child I was.
After Star, my favortie is "I'd Rather Be Blue". I went through hell trying to find the sheet for that arrangement! Never did.
I would be curious to see/hear/read the show, though.
This kid's shrewd Bobby, and I hate payin' for material... If you get your suit cleaned and we hate the same people it's a match!
I LOOOOOOOOOOVE FUNNY GIRL!! I'm sooo part of the keep the FG thread alive relief act.
A few years ago, when the movie was re-released, I had the pleasure of seeing it on the big screen. I was the only woman in the packed-full theater (not kidding!), and it was one of the most wonderful experiences ever. I went with a friend, and we quoted the movie all the way through and kinda sang along - it's okay, everyone else was doing it, so we weren't disturbing anyone.
The best moment was seeing "My Man" on the big screen. OMG - that moment is INTENSE. Even though I had seen it many times before, I got chills during the number- to the extent my friend had to ask me if I was okay...It was that thrilling.
