Not sure why some posters have such mean spirit about Criss. But as they say, haters gonna hate.

I don't hate Darren, I don't know him, I hate his voice.
And he is stealing roles from Real homosexuals.

I thought this message board was for adults. I am sort of bummed that the Broadway board now resembles the ramblings on my daughter's tumblr. She is twelve so by extension the comments here are by 12 year olds. I expected more. I don't know much about this Darren kid but all these comments are unnecessary especially from what I assume are adult posters.

So sorry to offend you, gentle Jojo. That's the way things go around here.
I don't think he has the voice to sing the Next To Normal score live. His thin voice will limit his stage musical options in all honesty. I mean, they are replacing Dan Radcliffe who was a fair/poor singer with two fair singers, Criss and Jonas. I mean the producers must have taken that into account.
He could never sing the American Idiot songs 8 times a week. Never happen.

Then maybe he can play The Man in the Chair in "The Drippy Casserole"

I just read your comment before this one Dollypop and if those are types of gems I expect from you and others on this board then I guess theater folk aren't as sophisticated and 'above it all' as they would like to assume.
Not everyone is as holier than thou as you are, HoHo. Must be nice to have a halo stapled on your head.

If by holier than thou you mean mature then you clearly demonstrate that is the case. Being mean for mean's sake is so junior high school that I can't even. I guess that

Jordan, Jojo is the angel atop the Christmas tree. You have to understand what life is like for someone who has a tree trunk shoved up the ass.

Dollypop, what even?
I can't believe I ever took you people seriously.
You mean in the 3 minutes you've been here?

Nothing like an incompelete thought to clarify a point of view.
I love that a newbie is already calling regular posters names... Nice way to start!
Anyhow, back on topic. I think he'd make a great Fiddler in 'Fiddler On The Roof' or Woodtock in 'Snoopy!'
The role he was suggested for in American Idiot is the one guy who never really belts or anything. He has the "easier" material, some of the ballads, and his whole problem is that he's too laid back and chill to do anything else with his life.
His songs, especially "Give Me Novocaine" could fit Criss much better than material like "Are We The Waiting" or "Extraordinary Girl."

I think Woodstock is a great idea. How about Mme Arcati in BLITHE SPIRIT?
Pippin in Pippin comes to mind for a few reasons-
1. Other than the famous "big note" in Corner of the Sky, Pippin's music is poppy folk-rock (in most orchestrations) with very few long, challenging lines to sing. Since Criss's voice is best suited for pop material like he sings in his concerts, this is probably a good thing.
2. Much like Finch, but more so, Pippin wanders mercurially through the story without huge changes in emotional state or presence. Criss, as an actor, excels most at the "congenial, kind of nerdy, kind of elitist hipster type bro" character that Pippin essentially is at heart, but since he hasn't done much to break himself out of that box, Pippin will sit right in his comfort zone.
3. Pippin is a dance heavy show, and Criss and the press alike seem to emphasize that Criss is a dancer first, singer/actor second. Even looking at his work on Glee will emphasize that.

I don't know, I think the style is more naturally suited to his voice than classic showtunes material is, so I think it could work.
I haven't listened to the NtN cast recording in a while, but that I remember Henry didn't have any super huge vocal moments or anything. Nothing Darren couldn't handle I don't think. The NtN score is a lot closer to the style of music Darren writes, which I personally think he sings beautifully
Then again I'm not one of the people who thinks he sounds bad in How to Succeed either, but I do acknowledge that his voice is probably better suited for more pop-based fair. It's with that kind of music that the more airy, bright quality of it really works well I think
