Brave Sir Robin2, you know i hate people like you..when people type there is a chance that they may make more spelling errors then they usually would, give people a break. It's the internet, NOT a dictionary

I'm glad that people don't think I'm putting down Grey Gardens. All I'm saying is that even though it IS a work of artistic merit, the likes of which Broadway rarely sees (I'd say we get works like this once every season or so), it was not a financial success. Rent IS a financial success but, from the sound of it, it sounds like new life should be breathed into it (and I don't mean make the changes they did with Rent Remixed (shudder)). And the director and producers are the perfect people to do that.

And, Winston, my screenname is spelled MattBRAIN. Not Brian, BRAIN. Like Pinky and the Brain. That's why brain is in there in the first place. Cuz I was obsessed with Pinky and the Brain.

Re: Sir Robin's comment re: misspellings. As an English major with a Master's Degree in English Lit, I'm not so appalled by any mispellings because nothing said on this site is meant for formal publication, submittal for a class, or any other kind of formal writing. It's more like informal conversation and, because some folks are anxious to get their thoughts/opinions out there, they should not be expected to re-read everything they write for syntax, context, spelling, etc., etc. I'm not saying they should be sloppy but what is being said seems more important than the niceties. As long as the point is made, that's good enough for me. Thank you.

as much as I hate to say TCP is on its last legs IMO. Its a great show but the numbers arent so high for it re: Show Closings
Avenue Q, friend just say the show a few days ago and said it was depressingly empty. And the numbers show that being empty isnt a rare event. But idk, I think it may hold out till next year.
RENT I dont think will close, like everyone has said, low running cost, still draws audiences in...why close it? I think it just needs a new cast. This one is getting old.
And my brother just read the topic and wants me to post this, he personaly thinks TLM will close. Idk why he thinks that, it seems like the name alone will draw people in, but you never know.

the phantom of the opera should closed because it has been around forever and it is time for it to go by by.

BraveSirRobin,

It is the internet we are dealing with. It is not as if I have to submit a formal essay about all my opinions instead of just leaving a simple comment.

Get over yourself. I know I misspell a lot when I am writing in a quick informal setting like this or an instant message for example. But, the whole point is to say what you need to say and move on. As oppose to a formal paper, spelling and grammer should be taken into strong consideration. However, if you misspell a word or two or three it isn't the end of the world.

That being said,

I don't think that Phantom is or should go anywhere. I saw it a few times over my vactation. And despite the fact that it is almost 20 years on Broadway it hasn't really shown its age.

Q should go. It has run its course and made back all its money. And it wouldn't be considered a failure at all if it did.

And about Curitains. I don't know if having a typical Broadway actor in the show would have effected ticket sales. I doubt it. But, when your starting out on Broadway your trying to get people in the door and keep them comming in. With Pirce in the show it is getting a vast amount of people in the door due to name recgonition. But, the real qustion lies in what is going to happen when he leaves.

It could have a reverse effect. What I mean by that is that people could just flat out not turn up anymore because he isn't there anymore.

One the things that makes Broadway theatre so special is the mix of old and new. It's exciting to see new shows develop, but also nice to count on a select few long runs. Phantom is timeless, and I hope that Mamma Mia goes on to break the Winter Garden record, but as for Rent and sadly, Avenue Q, I don't see how they'll survive the dead of winter season.

I think Avenue Q, Curtains and Legally Blonde will not see 2009. Avenue Q has had a good run and has already recouped, so there's would be no shame in it closing. I think the grosses for Curtains might drop when David Hyde Pierce leaves because he is the one major draw for the show. Legally Blonde's grosses haven't been stellar for a few weeks and the winter months might be difficult for them.

As for RENT... I think it's time that we send this show out. It's been 11 years, how long do the producers intend to let this stale, pale shadow of a great show run?? When I saw it 2 years ago, the cast looked like they were on autopilot the whole time. It seemed like they were just there to collect a paycheck. Now I never saw the original cast, but I did see the touring company a few years back and they had far more energy than the Broadway cast that I saw. I think that the producers should announce the closing early enough so that all the Rent-heads from around the country can make one last pilgramage to see the show. Then they can send it out with a big to-do, like what they did for the 10th anniversary.

It has struggled after the strike but from what friends have told me, it did very well for the Christmas week.

That is true. They were sold out for at least part of the week.

So... what are the chances that "Xanadu" will still be around in June? I don't know what I would enjoy more... seeing the show or those dedicated Xanadu fans. from RC in Austin, Texas

I agree with so much on this thread. Not the chat about the shows but the picking on people regarding spelling etc. Some people on here are amongst the rudest i've ever met. Ed Mottersheads comment on page 3 should be published at the heading of all threads.

It really does seem like RENT has been struggling. It is sad for me because I'm a fairly new Rent fan, I've liked it for almost a year.

When I saw it for the first time this past June, It was sad to see the lack of people there. I went again in August when Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal returned and you couldn't even get NEAR the theater. The line to get in the theater was literally wrapping around the block, it was amazing to see such a diffrence, but it was obviously because of their return.

Supposobly after that, theres was literally no one there. Less than half the theater was fillled, even the lotto seats weren't all sold. But this past week I was in New York, and I passed the Nederlander two nights after the shows, and it seemed really crowded by the stage door, there were a ton of people.

But If they were to close soon... they should definitly do it the right way by announcing it early (like other people have said) and maybe bring some of the OBC back.

The Phantom of the Opera is a New York classic as much as the Empire State Building or Central Park. May it live to see another 20 years on Broadway.
RENT, well, if you look back at the grosses, it was doing badly before the movie came out, then the movie brought a spike it sales, and now it is hitting a new record lows. I am one of the most obsessed pyscho RENT fans out there, but it has been years since the Broadway production has had STRONG singers in EVERY SINGLE role. Almost every time I watch Angel sing "Today 4 U" I want to cover my face because I cant believe how tired and bored the actor playing Angel looks. Does that mean the show should close? Noooooooooooooooo way. Like other people have said, it just needs a little tender loving care.

I would love for Hairspray to close because I think it does a terrible disservice to interracial romance everywhere. It strongly suggests that the main way for Seaweed to get out of his "ghetto" is to be with a white girl, and the lyrics in that particular song suggest that black=bad, and white=good. As a teacher of young black men in a ghetto neighborhood, I see the effects of so many black athletes and actors who exclusively marry white girls now that they have "made it", and for Hairspray to continue that stereotype is so damaging that the show should close immediately.

Legally Blonde is still doing good business considering it played on MTV as it did.

I still think that Legally will probably close and Curtains will go when David Hyde leaves the show

RENT should do a big final blast like they did with CATS and LES MIZ.

What about Spamalot? When I was in NYC I was shocked that it was still running. Also, I'm pretty sure that it only sold out the week of Christmas because of the tourists. Doesn't it seem like it's time is up?

Oh I doubt Spamalot will go anytime soon.
The tour was in Washington DC and on a Wednesday Night it was TOTALLY SOLD OUT.

All of you are making judgments without looking at how the shows are doing financially.
