but it is still portrayed as getting a white girl = ticket out of the ghetto
He's surprised at his feelings for her, so he's using her as a ticket out of the ghetto? Yeah, that makes sense.
Not.

That's the second person that is trying to bring back that early 90's phenomenon---the "not!" Let's all try it and see if everyone on BWW starts saying "not" again, maybe we could bring this trend back!
Dancingthrulife despite your usage of "not" I still see what you're saying, and yeah he does definitely feel surprised what what he's feeling. However--part of his "surprise" is that he never thought he could get with a white girl because that would be his ticket out of the ghetto. It is a terrible stereotype. the creators or Hairspray could have chosen to dwell on another another aspect of Penny's and Seaweed's courtship, but instead they chose to go with the stereotypical poor black guy thrilled at his chances of snagging a pure white girl and getting out of the ghetto. How lame.

"Our young blk men need to be taught that interracial love is of course fine, but not when you view people as objects like Seaweed did."
The problem is that you seem to have already prejudged any relationship between a black man and a white woman to be all about the black man's views on what a white woman represents and never about who the white woman is. Is it possible that maybe the black man actually fell in love with the white woman and who she was regardless of color? Also, the media is selling that view to young black men, so if one of your students goes out and dates/marries a white woman, then in your eyes, it's also not about love but about what he views dating a white woman to mean.
So back to your original statement, when is it ever ok for a white woman to date a black man because it seems like it's never actually going to be about love for you.

You said you would rather see a black woman marrying a white man. Couldn't you say the same about a black woman trying to get out?

Rotel!!!! You got me all wrong buddy! It would have been PERFECT if the creators of Hairspray would have kept the interracial love in there, but just approached it another way, rather than the stereotypical way. (Why am I starting to sound like a broken record? grrrrr) Its totally possible that Seaweed could have fallen for her regardless, but both characters specifically mention skin color when they talk about their attractions.
I appreciate that you tried to understand where I was coming from when I discussed my student's view of Hairspray, but I must not have made my intent clear enough. What you implied about my views on my students is so offensive I will not dignify it with a response.

How do I have you all wrong? Very clearly, interracial relationships are never about love but all about moving up. I think there are a lot more people of color that would be offended by that view than there are people who would take offense to a black man dating a white woman.
OH MY GOD! Can we seriously please stop this constant arguing and get back to what this thread was made for!!! I don't like people bashing Hairspray so george if you have questions or concerns about what Hairspray supports or what certain things of it are about why not find a way to contact someone like Marc Shaiman ,who helped write the music and lyrics for Hairspray, and have your questions answered and I'm not trying to blame this whole thing on george because others of you have kept this whole arguement going. This thread wasn't made for arguing back and forth. So just cut the crap and get back to the original topic!!!
I can't resist jumping in on one of the most bizarre discussions I've seen on these boards. First off, as it's already been said, Hairspray is a parody which means that of course it's using stereotypes to execute it's message (which is equality for all shapes and sizes - not just race). Every character in Hairspray is an exaggerated stereotype of the times (even Edna). That's what makes it FUNNY. Second off, where are you getting that Penny is Seaweed's ticket "out of the ghetto"? It seems to me he's more like Penny's ticket away from her mother. There is nothing in the script that implies Seaweed will go off to live a white suburban life with Penny. If anything will get him out of North Avenue, it will be getting his deserved opportunity to show his talents on a dance show that is "officially integrated" by the end of the script.
I just think you're not seeing the big picture

Ok Ok Hairspray beat you got me, I'm gonna drop my side of the argument. I have to respect your Hairspray love---I know if someone started calling Phantom racist or something like that I would probably die or at least throw my computer out the window...........so I'm officially letting it go.........not! Haha had to get one of the "not"s in there for those guys on here who are trying to bring the NOT back.
Ok yeah its over. Hairspray wins. George loses.
Sry Hrsprybeat, by the time I typed it you'd already posted. Anyway, I love getting in the last word!
Back to the original topic:
I think Cyrano and Les Miz will be closing soon... :)
I would really love to know lines and parts of the story that motivate you for this very bizrre argument, George.

Curtains will close whenever David Hyde Pierce leaves; Legally Blonde will last another year at most; Xanadu sometimes in 2008 and Spamalot as well.
Thanks george. Well anyway has cymbeline announced a closing date yet. If not that one cuz its making the least amount of money ,according to the grosses, of the shows on broadway and I'm a little worried about Rent.
Oh Cymbeline closes tonight. lol
....I wish I'd made it here in time to get in on this argument with Georgie here....I'm all for starting a new thread about it!

How long do you think any of the now long running shows will last. It;s pretty interesting to see what these people thought four years ago and what came true.

That was an extremely entertaining thread to read.
Out of the long running shows, I don't think any are going anywhere in the near future, but if any were to go in the near-ish future, I'd suspect Chicago. Next would be Mamma Mia. Both their box office numbers are fairly consistent, but the Chicago fan contest makes me suspicious.
Mamma Mia! Is doing just fine. As for Chicago, it is a cheap show to run. Plus is always pulls in good numbers over summer and the holidays.

Yeah, Chicago and Mamma Mia aren't going away for a while, especially since Chicago and Lion King are now next to each other in the all-timers club.
Speaking of which, I suspect Chicago will stick around for at least one more year, just to surpass Chorus Line (ditto Mamma Mia, which enters the top ten this fall).
