Will it have a life after Broadway ?
Anyone have any thoughts on this.

Posted: 3/17/07 at 9:49pmI think it will have a very large life in Regional theater. A successful tour could be very tough. I just don't think Haylie Mills can do the role justice!

Posted: 3/17/07 at 9:49pmInteresting thought. There are so few people in the world who could take on that role. I really hope so, though, because it's a show that needs to be seen.

Posted: 3/17/07 at 9:50pmMy thinking exactly. Regional yes but doubt it will tour like a regular musical would

No, no and no. The subject matter doesn't work for the masses. Most haven't even heard of the documentary, so a musical about characters featured in a documentary is pointless.
I know 2 people who were upset with GREY GARDENS because it had NOTHING to do with Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. They thought it was a musical about her since she's heavily mentioned in most of the media exposure.
Oy!

Posted: 3/17/07 at 9:59pmMaybe it will play at a few theatres in major cities a la CAROLINE, OR CHANGE. I think it'll have a healthy life in regional theatres, unlike most people think, the show's legacy WILL survive without Christine Ebersole.

Yeah. When they started using Jackie for all of the press I was really torn. I knew it was smart and would get people in the seats, which was important to me. But, I also knew it could blow up in their faces when they see how little she has to do with the story. Even in the second act Lee is a bigger presence than Jackie, as it was in the ladies lives.
I'm sure for a tour they would REALLY pump up the Jackie angle and really piss people off.

I said that Piazza was too smart to tour and I got a lot of backlash which I deserved. Look how well it's doing! I'm not going to say the same about Grey Gardens, though if I did I don't think I'd get such negative comments towards my remarks. I think Grey Gardens will do well on tour. The Jackie O think will get people in their seats, but once they see the wonderful story and hear the wonderful music, they'll realize what a great show it is. If Ebersole tours it would be even better, though I doubt she will with her family and all.

I think GREY GARDENS will have a succesful tour. If a show on Broadway gets good reviews (or even mediocre ones), people who live throughout the country who love theatre but can't make it to NYC will go see this when it comes to their state. It's not about knowing the source material, it's about wanting to go see good theatre.
I also think that there are MANY people who could play little Edie as good, if not better than Ebersole. Ebersole is a revelation, but her strength lies in the poetic licenses of Edie, rather than in impersonation. Any die hard GREY GARDENS (the film) fan will tell you that while Ebersole comes frighteningly close to nailing Edie, it's not that uncanny, and I have heard people do it better - particularly men that I work with.

Posted: 3/18/07 at 1:58amJV, good point about "Piazza" doing well. There's one example where arty fare has outpaced the spectacle and name brand recognition of something like "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels." Didn't I hear somewhere that Christine said that if it went on tour she would go with it?

"I just don't think Haylie Mills can do the role justice!"
Wait, why are we bringing Haylie Mills into this? Has she been considered for something?

Posted: 3/18/07 at 3:08amAren't Joan Collins and Linda Evans set to tour? I am not sure who is playing which role, though. Perhaps they can switch!

Good God, don't even joke about that. I'm going to have nightmares.
#13re: GG Question
Posted: 3/18/07 at 6:31amI mentioned Haylie Mills because of the current pool of "name" talent in the touring world right now. No, Haylie Mills is NOT playing Edie any time soon, but if that rumor starts spreading I take FULL CREDIT!!!

i love the image of gay people at work telling me about how "mother just wasn't well during the war" and they had to stay to take care of her...

FYI -- just to correct you: it's HAYLEY Mills, not HAYLIE.
#18re: GG Question
Posted: 3/18/07 at 10:29amEvery Community Theater Diva from East to West Coast is going to want to play either role - it will be huge on the amateur theater circuit. That isn't to imply that it will be good, but it will be huge. Personally, I can't wait to see and hear about all the wannabe Baranskis and their respective church basement productions. NOT.

I also have a question about Grey Gardens,
Has any of the profit from the Musical gone to the Bouvier Beal family? I'm not going to lie, becasue before I saw the show I didn't know much about these people, but I would hate for their lives to be on stage and they recieve nothing from it.

Posted: 3/18/07 at 11:12amuhm, they're both dead.
#23re: GG Question
Posted: 3/18/07 at 11:19amLittle Edie knew the musical was going to happen before she died in 2003. She was thrilled at the idea. The musical was created with the Maysles' (the documentary film makers) permission, etc. I don't know if they get any royalties, but it wouldn't surprise me.

The Maysles MUST be getting royalties. The entire second act is directly ripped off of what they captured on film. The musical couldn't have come into being without the documentary.
