GOD OF CARNAGE First Preview

Posted: 2/28/09 at 11:35pmThanks very much for the detailed info -- I've been waiting all day to hear about the opening night! I'm coming into town in less than two weeks to see it myself, being a huge fan of the entire cast, Gandolfini in particular. Which brings me to my urgent question - does James still have that goatee he was sporting at the press conference last week, or did he go back to being clean-shaven? Many thanks.

Posted: 3/1/09 at 12:00amDid not see him too up close, So I could be wrong here. I was nine seats back in the center, but I'm almost positive clean-shaven. And more than glad to add my thoughts on the show. Really it's nothing too impressive, but I certainly enjoyed it and with a cast that great you really can't go wrong.

Ah, the Julia door.
And how was the projectile vomiting?
And was Gandolfini believable as someone with class?

Re stagedoor: Hope, Marcia and Jeff use the Julia Door. James exits through the alley, although once some people saw him try to escape the made like a stampede and almost attacked him. People surrounded his car and the driver had to kind of push them away. Some lady in a nearby SUV started yelling, "Hey Tony! How's it going?" He looked very uncomfortable and I actually felt really bad for the guy.
Re Show: I liked the show, but more for the performances than for the actual material. It's not bad by any means, but it seems like it was written more as acting excerise than anything else. The cast truly delivers too. They all get to laugh, cry, scream, meltdown, pick themselves up and most importantly emote.
I agree with Mormonophobic that the standouts were the women, but I liked James and Jeff too. If you are a fan of one or more of this actors go see this show because you will not be disappointed by what they're doing.
****mild spoilers****
There are A LOT of sight gag gimmicks. Hope Davis vomits all over everything, and I mean everything. Marcia tackles James and pummels him on the couch. They each keep reaching for a bottle of rum that slowly is emptied by the end. Hope throws tulips all over the room and puts Jeff's cell underwater. The gags are exciting, and I laughed, but they seemed to come every five to ten minutes in fear that we might start getting bored.
****end mild spoilers****
Did I enjoy myself? Yes. Was it the greatest play ever written? No, but there have been a whole lot worse.

Posted: 3/4/09 at 9:33amI saw GOD OF CARNAGE last night and enjoyed it a good deal. Solid skillfully written play more like Albee than anything else. Excellent performances all around. It will get tighter over time, as they continue to work on it, but I think it will do very well indeed. It is certainly in better shape than that IMPRESSIONISM thing.

The more I think back on the show, the more I like it. Maybe it's just that I saw it surrounded by Impressionism, Rooms and Guys and Dolls, but God of Carnage has a lot going for it and I wish it well.
Does anyone think the actors will get any Tony nominations our of this?

The more I think back on the show, the more I dislike it.
I think the only actor who has a chance at a nomination is Marcia Gay Harden (she was clearly the best of the four), but I think this will be forgotten come June.

Posted: 3/4/09 at 4:48pmHas anybody asked about student rush yet?
#38re: GOD OF CARNAGE First Preview
Posted: 3/4/09 at 4:50pmWhen I picked up my ticket at the box office on Sunday, the guy before me asked "Any rush?" and the lady replied no. Not sure whether she meant rush in general or just for that particular performance.

Posted: 3/5/09 at 12:17amKinda crazy, all these cocky box office types who would prefer to let seats sit empty than charging a rush price to someone who asks at the last minute. Producers, take note. Is zero better than $20.00 or $25.00???

Posted: 3/5/09 at 12:30amThe cocky box office types are just doing their jobs. They can't just start selling rush tickets if the producers don't want to.

LIVE THAT LESSON!!!!!!
#42re: GOD OF CARNAGE First Preview
Posted: 3/5/09 at 9:05amThe "Julia" door is when you walk out of the theatre and make a right as opposed to the regular stage door on the left that the Avenue Q theatre uses as well. It's also the door the kids of 13 came out after the first few weeks of previews because they were making to much noise at the regular stage door and disturbing Avenue Q performances.
