The big buzz at NY City Center tonight was not only the presentation of ENCORE'S FOLLIES. Numerous theatre "queens" were buzzing about an extended sit-down run of GYPSY this summer at CITY CENTER starring Patti Lupone as Rose; directed by Arthur Laurents - the musical's librettist. Anyone have any further information?
Exact details were in the "vague" to "heresay" category!

Would it still be a concert version? Or will it be a full scale production? I'm hoping full scale!
I assume it would transfer to London following this.

saw it at ravinia.
she was amazing as 'mama rose'.
as much as i love bernadette peters i didn't care for her 'rose' at all.
patti was just a revelation. she should have been the one to headline the more recent b'way revival (but we all know why that didn't happen).
anyway, part of me just can't help but think: "gypsy"?!!....again?!!!!.
it's easily one of the most overplayed musicals in theatre history.
but if it does happen it's going to be the must see event of the summer and yes, every queen from here to venus will be knocking each other over to get the best seats.

After her triumph at Ravinia, Arthur Laurents decided he would look bad if he continued to block Patti from playing Rose.
So he came up with a way to save face: by directing the show HIMSELF.
I'm glad he relented, but he's still the evilest queen who ever lived.
More evil even than TheEnchantedHuntress.

So, yesterday I said there were two productions I'd like to have been there from the beginning as a fly-on-the-wall...I lied. There are now three. This is one of them.
