re: GYPSY at City Center? Casting?

I was just about to start a thread on this.

I wouldn't give a SH*T if the rest of the cast sucked, but I'd prefer they didn't...

I hope they announce the other casting soon, I'm dying to know.

she replied, "I dont know...City Center?" which isnt a satisfying answer

...they never are. When I emailed her about what dates she wouldn't be in Gypsy, she emailed back long after I bought the tickets and told me useless information. Jesus, I love her.

Why Gypsy is obviously a star vehicle, the featured players, especially June, Louise, and Herbie can make or break the show.

I saw this thread on the main page as "GYPSY at City Center? Ca" and thought it was cancelled. My, this has been a relief!

re: GYPSY at City Center? Casting?

Back when auditions were happening there was a rumor going through the equity building that since the Choreographer was the same from the production that Patti was JUST in, He was going to pretty much take the cast from that. That's why the auditions were fairly empty.
The day that I went there were like 10 equity actors signed up and about 2 were men. It was a really sad showing. I only had to wait an hour or 2 to be seen and they ended up seeing all the non-eqs that signed up.
Personally, I'd like to see the cast be a little different cause I'm sure there are some GREAT people out there for those roles.

re: GYPSY at City Center? Casting?

Christmas, I heard quite the contrary.

Jessica Boevers (who played Louise opposite LuPone in the Ravinia prodouction) said that City Center wanted to try and get a more "established" cast for the run in New York, which led me to the impression of them wanting recognizable faces if not names.

Jessica wasn't expecting to be asked back and said the rest of the Ravinia cast wasn't either, though any and all of them would love to if given the oppertunity.

Though they don't need any more star wattage than Patti, my guess is they'll try their damndest to get it anyway.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.

Anyone know how ticket sales are?

The ticket sales better be good or City Center will sink. I've been told that even with a complete sellout the production is budgeted to lose $400,000.

I'm sure she'll be fine. But I'm dying to know who will be playing Louise. She's the more developed and interesting role.

$400,000 loss??? Ouch.
I'm also quite interested to know who has been cast as Louise and also Herbie. Don't know why I care because I won't even be able to go but still.

Orchestra seats are still available for the first preview and Opening Night. Perhaps the announcement of the rest of the casting will up ticket sales a bit.

re: GYPSY at City Center? Casting?

I know this is longer than a usual Encores run, but wouldn't it be fun to have some real NYC favorites/names in the parts? Won't happen, but wouldn't it be fun for them to play parts they won't get cast in normally. Imagine Sutton Foster as Louise, Andy Karl as Tulsa, Jan Maxwell/Emily Skinner/Jackie Hoffman as the strippers, Phil Bosco as Herbie. Can't think of a June...

re: GYPSY at City Center? Casting?

If that is true I can really see her in the role. She has the charisma, the vulnerability, and will be a glamorous Gypsy Rose Louise. The only reservation I have is if she won't look too plain before the "transformation" and if she can really belt "Let Me Entertain You" (like Cynthia Gibb).

re: GYPSY at City Center? Casting?

Action2, yes it would be fun to see Sutton Foster as Louise (though Laura Benanti was a Broadway favorite until the absences during "The Wedding Singer."

re: GYPSY at City Center? Casting?

Isn't Laura Benanti a little too long in the tooth for Louise? (and I'm a fan, btw)
