Pretty epic set -- would love to see it (though still burned over season 8 of the TV show...)

These are some of the most mixed "mixed reviews" I've ever seen, from brilliant to tepid as opposed to somewhere in the middle.

I think they're hoping it'll be another revenue stream for them to help subsidise the other stuff. They got royalties for Les Mis in the West End for decades and it helped them have a strategic reserve, start the streaming broadcasts and do education stuff. There was a kerfuffle when Cam Mac did the restaging in 2019 which stopped that. They still have matilda, but that's no where near the juggernaut that Les Mis was.

I happened to see this when I was in the UK and was enthralled. It was an enormous cast (36 by my count) and really visually stunning. Costumes were lovely and made me envious at times. The set is impressive and also spare at the same time, but it works. There's a LOT of puppetry, which I wasn't expecting, but in retrospect, it makes a whole lot of sense. They were still having sound issues when I saw it. I think it will be hard for any of the actors to really pop out and steal the show because it's such a large ensemble, but I was particularly impressed with Luke Brady, who I only knew from his musical work, Noah Ritter and Mariah Gale. Its running length makes it kinda impossible to transfer atm, but honestly, I think there's some more work to be done and then it can become a two parter. There are definitely moments that feel like it's just GOT fan service and I think they've got to decide whether to be that or something that can stand on its own, but the bones are there for this to improve.
It was also fascinating listening to the two couples behind me at the interval talk about what was going on since it was pretty clear none of them had ever seen a second of the series or read any of the books.
