There was an Off-Broadway musical in the late 1970's called "The Faggot". I don'y kow the plot, but I'm fairly sure it was NOT about a small stick of firewood.
Definately Zanna Don't, Taboo, Q, Bare...
Many shows just have references to homosexuality in them..
:)
Of course Jerry Herman--who can argue that Mame and Dolly AREN'T drag queens?
Here's an obscure one "Boy Meets Boy". No not the Bravo series, it's actually a musical. It's set in the 30's London and supposedly parallels the abdication of the King to marry a commoner. A basic premise of this show is that gay marriage was accepted.
Also "Dirty Little Show Tunes" Which is a review with gayed up Broadway standards.
Victor Victoria
Thorougly Modern Millie has a surprise gay twist.
Yeah...i have some of those cast recordings....but some of the not so famous ones, i dont have, and do u wanna know why? my town is so friggin conservitive...."oh no we cannot have controversial cds on sale" yet they'll go and put parantal advisary cds on sale, but certainly not musicals that deal with "bad things" yeah i hate my town.
Well not exactly a gay musical, but the one that best had a gay sensibility in regard to songs, general feeling, overall concept and sheer sensuousness was Cole Porter's OUT OF THIS WORLD. Unfortunately, this was a case when the cast didn't quite understand the jokes and lines were delivered with complete disregard to their impact. And the audiences and critics also were in the dark! Charlotte Greenwood, a gifted comedienne, was totally wrong for the part, which really begged for an Ina Claire or a Vivienne Segal. Speaking about Segal she was supposed to have said after seeing the male dancers in varous forms of disrobment, "I've got to go home and take a cold shower."
Miriam
Even stranger, Carol Channing was offered the role before Charlotte!
I read that one critic was a little upset by the overall 'lavender' feel of the whole production, saying something like (and I'm paraphrasing from memory here) "The gentlemen of the chorus are as unhampered by raiment as the patrons of a steambath". And it didn't help that leading man William Eythe was busted cruising a subway men's room not long before opening night, an event the producers had to quickly cover up!
There are a lot of gay-ish musicals aborning these days.
There's the ubiquitous adaptation of "But I'm a Cheerleader" which is probably going to be performed in NYC soon, as well as at least one gay-themed musical I know of set to premiere at the Fringe Festival this year.
Australia is a hotbed of gay musicals, including PRODIGAL, which played a season at the York Theatre Co. featuring Christian Borle.
David Campbell starred in ONLY HEAVEN KNOWS about a teenager finding love with a guy during World War II.
And opening in Sydney next week, BOYBAND, covering ten years in the life of a famous group with at least one gay member.
though it was a horrible horrible HORRIBLE musical that had me singing Into the woods to pass the time, BOUNCE! deffinitely deals with homosexuality. and Derek, it's not taboo here, you don't have to appologize for being queer or wondering about gay plays. this is Broadway after all....
COME SEE CHOSE A NEW MUSCIAL BY SUZANNE MCCOY-two couples one male and one female learn to navigate the world of internalized homophobia, fear of committment and the true meaning of love and what tragedies can happen along the way.

Just because a show has a gay character doesn't make it a gay musical or show. Why pigeonhole a production as being "gay" if it doesn't deal with gay issues just because there is a gay character in it?

Spamalot
I think it was on Will and Grace that they pointed out the My Fair Lady is a really gay musical. Two confirmed bachelors get excited to dress a woman up in fancy clothes.
my favorite is A MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE, a wonderful little show by McNALLY, FLAHERTY, and AHRENS
cast recording at amazon
in one production i've seen of JCS they portayed Judas, Jesus and Mary in this gay love triangle, ergo implying that because Judas was jealous that was why he betrayed Jesus
The Rocky Horror Show
A Man of No Importance
Zanna, Don't
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
There are also many Musicals with homosexual characters - ranging from Chicago to The Full Monty to Spelling Bee
I know this has nothing to do with the initial question, but I was reading the thread and was outraged that someone would portray Jesus as gay because he was not. A musical about Jesus' life would not (or rather, should not) portray him as being gay. It makes me SO UPSET that someone would do that.
btw, I have nothing against gay people, cuz then I would be prejudice against myself, which doesn't make much sense...
you dont know that..maybe he was..maybe he wasnt..he was a man on this earth..you're being terribly naive to think this.
you know what, I don't feel like fighting about this cuz I'm in a good mood, so I'm just secure in knowing I'm right and I'm no longer posting in this thread
How did this thread go two pages without mentioning Company.
And if Jesus was gay, that's news to Mary Magdalene and their daughter Sara in France - oh, wait, this isn't the DaVinci Code message board is it?
