I almost missed it! Had no idea it was coming.

I agree--not sure it was the best match of song to TV audience, It was rocky at first, but once the framed portraits came to life and Jefferson Mays continued the song from Jimmy's sofa, it was better.

What song did they do?
I'm guessing since you mentioned the portraits it was I Don't Understand the Poor.
ETA: Never mind. I saw the link in the BWW headlines.

I'm surprised they chose this for Late Night but chose I've Decided to Marry You for Today. They had to take I've Decided to Marry You down a half step or so, it seemed like, to go a little easier on the singers' voices that early in the morning. I might've gone the other way around.
That being said, I agree that the song picked up when the portraits came to life and Mays sang a verse from one of the guest chairs.

Posted: 5/16/14 at 10:24amI think Jimmy is going to shape up to be the next Rosie for Broadway. I know when he had Late Night he often did "Broadway Week".

I remember him mentioning earlier when he was just starting on The Tonight Show how he thought one of the perks of being in New York was the ability to have performances from Broadway.
It seems like he's sticking to it!

I do wish Bryce Pinkham had done a little more. I see why they would choose to showcase their Tony nominated performer, but I still wish he had a little more to do.
It's so great to see that there are going to be more Broadway performances on TV. I'm never home when the talk show performances air, so late night is a better option for me to watch them.

Posted: 5/16/14 at 3:34pmPinkham is also a Tony-nominated performer, though.

Posted: 5/16/14 at 3:42pmEven more reason for him to have done something more!

Posted: 5/16/14 at 4:15pmPinkham is featured in almost all of the videos for the show. After they did "I've Decided to Marry You" on the Today Show they probably figured they should do a song featuring Mays. I'm glad they're not just doing the same song at every appearance even if it's the strongest in the show.

I would also imagine that NBC and Jimmy Fallon's producers would have a big say in which song is sung on the show, as would the Today show producers...as would CBS and the Tony show producers.
I'm sure these things have to be worked out very carefully.

Posted: 5/16/14 at 5:28pmI really enjoyed the show, but that number was unwatchable. Did anyone think that would sell many tickets. They better have something better up their sleeve for Tony night because that just ain't gonna do it
#15Gentleman's Guide on Fallon
Posted: 5/16/14 at 5:42pmIt's Better With a Man would be funny and feature both Tony nominated leads.

I thought they did a great job. I didn't think it started off rocky at all.
I've always felt this should be the song they present. I've Decided to Marry You is a great number but you gotta showcase Mays.
I completely missed the bit where he accidentally whips himself when I saw it at the Kerr, and it was a treat to see Mays' facial expressions so clearly.
I also love how enthusiastic Jimmy was. He genuinely seemed excited by the song.

Jimmy seems to get very excited when he has musical theater performers on, it's adorable.
I thought the number last night was great, personally. My roommate who knows nothing about the show/hasn't seen it yet liked it as well.
