Ken is DREADFUL. It's honestly laughable, some lines I literally laughed out loud at. He's horrible.
does anyone know when Stephen comes back?
That makes no sense. Has Rob ever even gone on?
Nope. He was on today as one of the ensembles in the chair. It's really strange how they never put him on.
dammit. I'm going back to Sept 1 and bringing my family with for the first time and I REALLY don't want to see Ken again. Hated his performance! I also wish like hell they'd put Rob in.

Gerard was wonderful! A clear sign that there is indeed life after John!
Jenn Damiano has a beautiful voice...and Matt Doyle knocked Otto out of the park. That touch me solo gave me chills.
Speaking of being off-pitch, I recently saw the show for the first time since it was off-broadway. I LOVED IT...but, I had a lot of problems with some of the voices. People were off-key ALL THE TIME. I couldn't believe it.
Gerard was absolutely fantastic! His voice was better than expected and his size (he's absolutely tiny) and age (he reads a true 14-15 compared to Johnny) allowed for a reimagination of Moritz.
I love Johnny, don't get me wrong, but Gerard stepped up and did an amazing job.
Also - I agree with the previous posters, Ken Marks is horrendous and Matt Doyle has a beautiful voice.

I traveled to NYC to see SA this past Saturday and was honestly extremely disappointed when I found out John G. Jr. was out. I had been looking forward to seeing him for many months. Despite this I was blown away by Gerard. He was amazing! His vocals were spot on the entire show and the quirks of Moritz came through brilliantly. I love John G Jr., but it makes me wonder how arbitrary a lead role is given between such brilliant people.
As a comment to another post above. I realize the cast performs this show 8 times a week and there may be a certain level of strain on their vocals, but I was slightly surprised and disappointed by some of the pitch problems during the Sat matinee. I'm not a critical person, but at times I thought certain cast members sounded like average singers. The leads were all amazing though.

I enjoy Spring Awakening a good deal, but that has always been an issue I've had with the show. The performers have been extremely pitchy every time I've seen it. And I was always like, "It's an off-night, surely." Then a few months later I'd go back and think, "Well, nope, apparently. It's just like that all of the time."
That being said, I would've loved to see Gerard, but that was one rush line I was not willing to brave!
PaulNYC, are you kidding me? Gerard going on was announced about a month in advance. If you like Gallagher so much, you could have exchanged your tickets.

No, I'm not kidding. I'm from out of town and had no idea. Maybe it's a very novice thing to say, but I assumed the chances that a cast member wouldn't be there was so slim it never occured to me to check ahead of time. I'm sure you can understand that. Also, we considered that but the tix said no exchanges or refunds. It was all fine in the end.

off-topic, but I wonder why someone so (reportedly) awful is cast as the Adult Men. He doesn't evn really sing, and the age is not that specific....there must be a jillion middle-age actors in New York who could do well in the role.

I saw it friday, and Matt Doyle was pretty good in the "Touch Me" solo, but his singing in "The Bitch Of Living" just didn't feel right. Not as strong as BCJ.

By the way, I'm usually the one to point out pitch problems, and I didn't hear any when I went (other than during Groff's falsetto later in the show)
They sounded better than I even imagined them.

I hesitate to say anything negative about any of them because they are infinitely more talented than I (and most), but I think Skylar in particular sounds slightly pitchy when he starts his part in Bitch of Living. This is something I've noticed in person and in a live video. It seems that after his first phrase he finds his place and all is good. In retrospect, everyone was amazing though...I'm definitely not gonna be that person that criticizes minute details for no reason. I was impressed and would see it again next time i'm in NYC!

yeah, he was way sharp on the tony performance.

They seem to be a lot worse in this respect when on TV....nerves, I suspect.
Rush wasn't bad at all, broadwaybaby086. I was really shocked at how empty it was, especially considering the mob scene that was the rush for Matt Doyle as Melchior.

I didn't know about it till a few days before he went on.

Groff essentially sounded perfect (or what I imagine his best is) when I saw the show in April, and when I saw the show a few weeks back he was having some vocal problems. Especially with the falsetto. He works well through it, but he should take more vacation. SA fans are obsessive about understudies, so it's not like he'll disappoint that many people.
I saw Ken, Alexandra (for Anna), and Gerard (for Hanschen) in the last performance I saw. I was amused to see the reaction from the fans being completely opposite from mine. Alexandra was hated by many fans, but just fine to me (in a role so underwhelming that you'd never notice that Phoebe Strole is even half as special as the Spring Awakening obsessives make her out to be). Ken was not as good as Stephen, but not noticeably awful. I probably just didn't care enough to notice. Gerard, who seems completely adored by the fans, was the weak spot of the entire performance. Totally pointless and charmless in that role. He made Gideon Glick seem like a one man act of absurdity. Which is the only thing that came close to saving that subplot.
So I guess I have a hard time imagining Gerard being a great Moritz. Glad he didn't disappoint those who saw it, though.

I think a lot of the Phoebe praise comes from those of us who have seen her as Ilse and or Wendla. She's amazing in both roles so that's where all the love comes from.

Yeah. I figured that's it. It often comes off as a byproduct of the overcompensating hatred of Lea Michele, but I can buy that she's been great in her more central performances.

Uh... I beg to differ, and you know that. :)

Most people like her, its just those obsessive Phoebe Strole-loving GUILTY ONES that make her look worse than she actually is. Lea is by far my favorite person who plays a role in every performance. Jenn, being my favorite, but she's in the ensemble.
