"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert
Maude and Golden Girls star Rue McClanahan is doing well after undergoing a cardial bypass, according to the actress' rep.
"She is doing absolutely great," McClanahan's rep told Access Hollywood. "She went for her physical the other day and her doctor didn't like what he found.... She was in great spirits when she went in for surgery yesterday. She's resting in a hospital in [New York] and she'll probably be out in a week."
The unexpected surgery forced McClanahan to cancel her appearance at a Nov. 14 tribute event in San Francisco. "My darlings, I'm just devastated that I am going to have to miss my own tribute at the Castro Theatre," McClanahan said in a statement to The Advocate, which first reported her hospitalization. "Unfortunately, my doctor has laid down the law, and I'm currently having some maintenance on the old ticker. Trust me, I'd much rather be in San Francisco having fun and being adored by all of you."
