Ghostlight to record NEXT TO NORMAL

Posted: 2/15/09 at 2:36pmThe Golden and the Booth are not that much bigger than the Hayes ~ I could see it going into either of them if they open up. The Longacre just seems WAY too big with the balcony in there too.

Posted: 2/15/09 at 3:40pmConsidering Second Stage will soon own the Hayes, it makes sense for the show to take it not only because of size but because of its history with 2ST.
#52re: Ghostlight to record NEXT TO NORMAL
Posted: 2/15/09 at 3:50pmI agree. But unless The 39 Steps finally throws in the towel soon, it won't happen this season. (And that sadly applies to the Golden and Avenue Q and The Story of My Life and the Booth as well.)

I don't think it's looking to transfer at this time. I don't think it would be overwhelmed in a larger house. I mean, the set is three stories, and the show feels almost bigger than it is because of the lighting and stuff. I'm not saying it needs to go into like the Hilton, but something like the Broadhurst isn't too big.
And isn't Tveit doing "Catch Me If You Can" for next season, so that leaves him out? I don't know about the rest of the cast members.

Posted: 2/15/09 at 6:52pmI know from listening to Grief in the lobby at Arena that they ARE hoping to transfer this season. AND that he knows that Tveit is going into that show. That's why I think they are aiming for now, especially if they just did the cast album with him. I think others have been told the same thing by the actors at the stage door, that they are trying to get into a theater this spring.

There's never been any sort of confirmation of Aaron doing CMIYC just loud rumors since he was involved in the reading.
Also, anyone know what happened to the LJ group 50thousandvolts? I posted a link to the Hayes nominations a few days ago and now the group isn't there anymore.

EnWashingtonHeights ~ I think that's a place-holder icon. Just to make sure the word is out.
As far as them wanting to open this season, that isn't really a secret. There was even an article about it on bloomberg.com before.

It definitely looks like 50thousandvolts got deleted.
It has the line through it on my list. Sadness!

Posted: 2/15/09 at 7:59pmReally? Hm. Seems like it would be a quick turn around, and no chance of them winning Best Musical. Almost seems pointless.

Who says Best Musical is what they're aiming for?
As far as turn around, they really don't have much tweaking to do, and I'm sure the set was essentially "erector-setted" down. It's not a complicated set.
It's definitely possible ~ especially if they're able to keep the same cast.

The cut-off for the Tonys is still two and a half months away. That's plenty of time for them to find a theater should they want to come in this season. The Longacre and Cort both do not have announced tenants for the spring, but I can't picture the show in either theater because of the balcony. I'm with jordangirl, N2N would be a good fit for the Hayes, Booth or Golden, but they all have tenants, at least for now.
I think it would do quite well actually. Granted, Billy Elliot presumably has Best Musical tied up, but N2N could do well in the acting and technical categories.

Posted: 2/15/09 at 8:24pmIt would definitely throw a monkey wrench into the acting ~ particularly Best Actress in a Musical. Definitely a year where they'll have to listen for the full name there. LOL. (Well, most likely.)

If the show came in this season, there would be no way Aaron Tveit could be involved (even if they did it "right away.")
He is under contract with WICKED right up until he begins rehearsals for CATCH ME IF YOU CAN.

First off BT3A07 ~ that is in reference to hoping for Next to Normal to open, so I'm not sure what's so rude about that.
Second ~ somethingwicked, do you know how that contract was drawn up? It's possible that there was a conditional clause in there, right? Especially if producers were serious about a transfer. And has anything been officially announced for Catch Me...? Even if it has, things do change (Hair anyone? The Eden thing seemed pretty official until it wasn't.). Conditions can be written into contracts, so unless you were the person who drew them up, you (nor I) really don't know what they say.

Posted: 2/15/09 at 11:21pmI searched, ive found nothing official linking Aaron to 5th street's CMIYC. Nothing in the playbill article, nothing on the 5th street website. As i said earlier, all of that has been rumor due to his involvement in the reading.
#68re: Ghostlight to record NEXT TO NORMAL
Posted: 2/15/09 at 11:30pmThat's what I was thinking nexttoelectric. He did the reading, but I didn't think there had been anything else announced.

Jack O'Brien confirmed to Playbill.com at the closing night party for HAIRSPRAY that Tveit, Norbert Leo Butz, and Kerry Butler have all signed on for CATCH ME IF YOU CAN.
I believe the Seattle run for the show launches in June, which means rehearsals will begin in April.
Even if NEXT TO NORMAL made it in this season (which I don't think it will,) it wouldn't even start performances until at least April.
Do the math.

He said in his Broadway.com interview thing that he had been offered the leader role in "Catch Me If You Can."
And why would they not be aiming for "Best Musical." What's the point if you're not? I can understand them not thinking they'd win, but for them to say they don't want it? That's a nice boost in ticket sales for any show that wins it.

But again, somethingwicked, contracts can be written with clauses in them. If when N2N came up as going to Arena there was definitely the talk of transfer back which based on what I've heard from people connected in there was), the contract could have been written with the condition that if a transfer does happen he would be released from other contracts. (Besides, the producers of Hair made it sound like Eden had signed a contract too. Just sayin...)
And "being offered" and "taking" are two very different things.
And if they don't have to wait for a show to close to go into a theater (if they took the Longacre, which I still hate but it's empty) it is certainly possible for them to be up and running before April. The set is not complicated and was likely taken down erector set style to be easily and quickly put back together ~ and it's not that technical of a set: no trap doors, elevators, turntables, etc.. And if they're able to keep the cast, the rehearsal process would be much shorter as the run has JUST finished.
I'm confused RentBoy ~ you say you understand them not thinking they'd win, yet earlier you said if they won't win what's the point. Perhaps they realize there is a story there that needs to be out there and to them, THAT is more important ~ the impact this story has on people ~ than a biased group of people voting for an award.

Since Barlow·Hartman handles Second Stage Theatre, I guess it's logical that they're handling the Broadway outing of Next to Normal.
Oooh, progress! No mention of date whatsoever. Mhm, soon.
