The 7th grade Girl Scouts had a choice of musicals that they wanted to see, and they chose Equus. I think they only chose it because it was about horses. I hope the troop leaders didn't know what they were going to see, because I'm pretty sure that they could've been fired.

Soooo, what do you think about 7th grade girls seeing Equus? I certainly don't think that they'll see Harry Potter in the same way again... :)

EDIT: They had no idea that Daniel Radcliffe was going to be naked. I know that for a fact.

ANOTHER EDIT: I know that Equus isn't a musical, they just had a choice of musicals, but they chose Equus instead. Sorry for not making that clear.

I think the girls wanted to go because they knew Harry Potter was going to take off his clothes.

I think it's funny that they thought it was a musical.

Equus isn't a musical and this is an awful choice on their part. Completely inappropriate.

I remember the first time I saw this wonderful production there was a mother there with her young girl there. I turned around and we were making small talk before the show. One of the things I asked her was if she knew what this play was about. Which was my nice way of asking if she was in her right mind for bringing her five year old daughter to a play that involves harsh animal abuse and on stage nudity. She said that it was about a boy's love for his horse. I rolled my eyes and sat down.

I hope they were not disapointed.

7th grade...
They know what a penis is, some of the girls may have even seen some before.
I don't think such a big deal should be made.

I wonder if they're planning to offer their cookies to Harry Potter after the show.

(I'm sorry, I couldn't resist.)

Being Girl Scout leaders isn't a job. It's a volunteer gig. So no firing possible.

Very sad that the adults in charge (OR the parents) actually did their homework. While it may not be inappropriate for ALL of them...it certainly is in this setting.

At this age, going to the theater (probably for the first time for MANY of them) should be an exhilarating experience. Most of this sophisticated language and situation will be lost on them.

However, maybe it could work as an abstinence lesson!

When I saw the show, there was a little girl who couldn't have been more than 11 or 12 sitting in the front row, dead center. I sure hope her parents knew what they were in for!

Pretty sure all the girls would have to get permission slips signed by their parents. I can't imagine a parent just signing it without knowing anything about the show.

Oh, please. Most parents are oblivious to what their kids do...even WITH permission slips. Since most have no idea what plays on b'way anyway...why would they think there is anything to look into? Besides, for the most part, they would "trust" that the GS leaders wouldn't plan something inappropriate. Most parents wouldn't investigate.

So you're saying that the Girl Scouts are just a dumping ground for child of absent parents?

Honestly, depending on the maturity level of the kids, I really don't see the problem.

And while you may not use the word fire, someone can be removed from a volunteer position, unless something has changed and being a troop mother is like being a priest - no matter what, you're always one.

When I went to Equus a few weeks ago, I was appalled to see some children who couldn't have been more than five or six at the show. I'm far from being a prude, but, really, the ends of both acts are NOT FOR CHILDREN. And I'm not talking about the nudity. But witnessing simulated orgasm and then the blinding of the horses is just WRONG. It's unfair to the child and any parent or responsible person who would subject these children to this material should not be a parent or a responsible person. Both scenes are disturbing in a big way. These kids have their whole lives ahead of them and they don't need to be f---ed up by an adult play. And another thing, I'm sure many of them were bored to death by the first half of the first act.

No...just no. I hope some of the parents found out about it before they bought their tickets.

I work with this age group. VERY few of them are mature enough to truly understand the whole thing.....more so than whether or not they should see nudity, or the sex scene.

They simply wouldn't be able to appreciate the intensity or magnitude that this piece brings.
