Give out your own best song tony!

Okay, guys I always thought that the way the Academy Awards has best new song in a motion picture, the Tonys should have best new song in a musical. So now I thought it would fun to select which song you think should have won the Tony for any or all of the years for which there has been Tonys, from 1947-present. You can go to tonys.org for a list of all nominated musicals in each year to help you out, but the song has to be entirely new(so an ABBA song from Mamma Mia or a Billy Joel song from Movin' Out would not be eligible). Also, new songs included in revivals(like Topsy Turvy in the new Fiddler on the Roof) are eligible. This should be interesting. Enjoy!

isn't this faux category redundant? after all they have a tony for best score- which is for all of the songs in a show so it pretty much sums it up nicely

Last season, who would have gotten Best Song?

I would nominate nearly all songs from Avenue Q, a couple from Wicked, some from CAROLINE, OR CHANGE...

In my mind, a song that would qualify to be the best song of the year better have a great message, be amazingly written, and be VERY universal. Songs like SEASONS OF LOVE, YOU CAN'T STOP THE BEAT. Songs like "It Sucks to Be Me" or the other drivel from AVENUE Q, in my mind, is not the best song of the year. Something true, and meaningful - maybe somethign from CAROLINE (it was definitely TABOO for me) but certainly nothing from WICKED.

Last season? I think "For Now" or "There's a Fine, Fine Line" from Avenue Q or "Lot's Wife" from Caroline.

A little swash, a bit of buckle - you'll love it more than bread.

Seasons of Love definitly! Hell I'd nominate almost anything from RENT. All their songs are amazingly written, beautifully sung and each song has its own unique yet powerful message.

I wanted to get something that an "ex"-junkie like him would really appreciate and cherish....it's a brick of heroin shaped like a heart. -Scrubs

Ya know, I just had a thought.

Rather than trying to cram another category and 5 Best Song performances into the already overstuffed, overlong 3 hour Tony telecast, why not have the Actor's Fund or Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS have a big benefit concert a week or two after the Tonys featuring the top ten or fifteen or even twenty Best New Broadway Songs of the year performed by the original cast members of the shows? It could be another event a la the Easter Bonnet and the Gypsy of the Year competitions.

You could have an big all-star panel of Broadway composers, musical directors, musicians, arrangers and orchestrators choose the nominees (with, perhaps, like the major league baseball all-star game, every new show gets at least one slot to perform -- c'mon, even the WORST shows have at least one song worth performing, and even if a show had closed at that point, I'm sure most performers -- or their understudies -- would be willing to come back and do a benefit for chairty).

Put it in a big venue and make it a big two hour event on a Monday night so that all (or most) of the currently working actors can attend.

Personally, I'd like it to be just a showcase for the composers and the performers, but, if need be, you could have a panel of judges there to choose a winner. Perhaps it could also be filmed, with the DVD/VHS proceeds also going to charity.

Anybody else like the idea?

I like any venue that will give me a chance to hear and see more Broadway out here in the sticks. (You know - the Washington, DC wilderness).

The only problem I have is that my favorite on Broadway right now is the revival of La Cage - with the current cast. I didn't think the original cast was nearly as good.
