Posted: 3/19/09 at 1:40pmI can only make time to see one. I can't decide. It basically comes down to if I want to laugh or cry. Anyone seen both? Opinions???

Posted: 3/19/09 at 1:43pmI have to STRONGLY agree with WAT. Irena's Vow is the must-see show of the season. God of Carnage is good, but not on the same level.

Posted: 3/19/09 at 1:53pmIrena's Vow. Absolutely, positively. Can't say it strongly enough, but I'll try. If you don't see Irena's Vow, you and all your descendants will have to live with the shame of having missed the opportunity.

Haven't seen Irena's Vow yet, I'm sure it's great, but please ignore these dismissive opinions on God of Carnage. It's not for everyone, but if you like (a) dark humor and (b) seeing three -- or four, depending on your point of view -- of the absolute best actors working today engaging in a vicious battle of words and acting their asses off without one scene change or one actor exiting (they're f***cking ON for 90 minutes straight), you'd do well to not let it go by.
Like I said, I'm sure Irena's Vow is great, but God of Carnage -- though the few on this board that have seen it besides me may not have been crazy about it -- is something I really feel like people are going to be talking about for years.

Irena's Vow is a satisfying emotional experience, with a great lead performance at its center... but it's sort of obvious, clumsy, and not very well constructed (obviously this is my opinion). It isn't a great work of theater. If you appreciate Tovah Feldshuh... go... it's worth it... though I thought Golda's Balcony made more of a case for her "greatness" status.
God of Carnage is, perhaps, a more satisfying theatrical experience with a whole ensemble of actors firing on all cylinders... the timing is remarkable and a wonder to watch. Emotionally, it isn't satisfying... but it's aimed at the head and the gut... not the heart.
It depends on the experience you are looking for.

"Emotionally, it isn't satisfying... but it's aimed at the head and the gut... not the heart."
Totally agree with MOST of this. It isn't a heart-wrenching show, or an immensely emotional experience, but there's definitely moments in their that really resonate on an emotional level, even if you're not 100% sure in what way.
What's perhaps the most fascinating thing about the show is that it's hilarious, but no one's being "funny." No one's making "jokes." Though it's not so much of an emotional experience for the audience, the actors are all giving incredibly volatile, emotional performances with every one of them at least having a couple moments with visible tears in their eyes (Davis and Gay Harden get the most of this). In fact, it's an odd experience in that the more emotional and sad the actors play it, the funnier it is.

Posted: 3/19/09 at 4:07pmI HAVE seen both, and while I did love God of Carnage, I would say Irena's Vow. Unless you REALLY need to just laugh that night. Then God of Carnage.
LIVE THAT LESSON!!!!!!
