Good Summer programs for a high school junior

Posted: 1/8/05 at 1:53pmHey everyone. I've seen some posts on here about summer acting programs but I don't like the responses. I'm looking for non-musical programs in the New england and/or New York area. No longer than 3-5 weeks. Any links and experience stories about some programs would be greatly appreciated. (just to let you know I've been in many productions and have talent/experience so I'm not looking for beginners courses. thanks)

Well, its not in New England or New York, but Interlochen Arts Camp has some 4 week sessions in addition to their 8 week sessions, and its an amazing place where a ton of talent is present. It's in Michigan, but its absolutely gorgeous. Past alums include: Anthony Rapp, Sara Gilbert, Ben Foster, Jewel, Adam Pelty, and thousands more in every field of the arts.
Have fun! Good Luck!

I'm back! Also in Michigan (Which, sadly, is where I'm from, so I can't weigh in on other places) there's Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, which I know has a strictly non-musical theatre program.

Posted: 1/8/05 at 2:39pmActually they, do interlochen.org. I went there last year for musical theater. It is somewhat challenging (only for the better) but soooooo much fun. The dance was the hard part (for me). Although iac is know for its classical music background, their musical theater and regular theater is very good. You do have to wear uniforms but you will get over it. Last year I did "fame" at the middle school level but this year im applying for the high school level which is much more competitive. If you have a good voice then you can get in. Also note that they changed the lengths of the sessions from four and eight weeks to three and six weeks.

Posted: 1/8/05 at 3:04pmwhat's the broadway theatre project? links? also, interlochen is sounding pretty good. thanks for the info ACTlete but I won't be doing the musical program or dance program. Is there a lot of down time there? for the rep. program would I be busy a lot? I want to be pushed. Also, for the audtion process, what did you do? did you do a video?

Posted: 1/8/05 at 3:06pmcheck out some college programs... maybe NYU or Columbia if you want NYC... i've heard only amazing things about all of their programs, from musical theater to journalism and sciences. same with columbia or barnard.

Posted: 1/8/05 at 3:21pmYes you do have to send in a video with two monologues or something. I know it’s on the site. As for straight theater, i saw a lot and was very impressed. I think that their straight Theater is more well known over their musical theater. There is a good amount of down time and a lot of fun activities. You have four classes all together which keep you busy, but there is time in between too. I live in the new England area and have other camp names such as north shore ect. P.S. NYU is very, very hard to get in to for theater, they don’t even have you send in a tape just your name and G.P.A.

Posted: 1/10/05 at 5:27pmInterlochen is a great place to be. If you are looking to go into the high school division, be ready for some serious competition, it's incredibly competitive. Just be sure to do your very best on the video, and if you're good enough, you'll be there. I was also there this summer in FAME, I was there session A, who are you ACTlete?

Posted: 1/10/05 at 5:35pmI'm a junior, too, so I know it's hard to find something decent and reasonable to go to. I would seriously recommend interlochen. (I don't know about your situation, but I know for me it was quite expensive) but it really is worth it.

NYU has an incredible Tisch Summer High School program. Only three studios participate - CAP21 (musical theatre), Lee Strasberg Institute, and the Experimental Theatre Wing. If you want non-musical training and you want to learn the "method" -- go to Strasberg. Each studio only takes sixteen people each summer, so it is super-focused and personal. I went to the CAP21 program this past summer and it literally changed my life. PM me if you have any questions...
Also I cant help but think that going to the summer program greatly assisted me in getting into NYU for college.

Posted: 1/20/05 at 12:34amAgain, this isnt in the new england area but Glendale Centre Theatre offers 3 week sessions with a little bit of everything (dance, voice, theatre, improv, film technique, business: agents etc) with a final performance in the end. Its pretty small but I went to one of the sessions and their fall/winter classes and have NOT been dissapointed in the least.

Posted: 1/20/05 at 11:00amHow come no one has mentioned STAGEDOOR MANOR? It's expensive, but I guess most summer theater programs are. You can do either a musical or a straight play (they let you choose). Each session is about three weeks long, and you do one show per session (you can stay for just one or do all three sessions).

The National High School Institue at Northwestern University is an amazing program. As I have said before and I will say it again, it was by far the most amazing program I have been to for theatre. It will change your life! You get so much attention and work with such a professional staff. If you are willing to put your heart and soul into a proffesional atmosphere for five or seven weeks, your body, sould, mind, and passion for theatre will be revived and worked to the core. I promise if you do this program and give in 100 percent you will get more out of it than anyother program. It is well worth a look!
