Lol...I just read the title and thought The Lady of the Lake in "Knights of the Round Table." I always manage to sing and mess up that scat in my car when I'm listening to it.

lol, interesting thread title. Very interesting indeed.
Who wuda thunk that word had a more musical meaning?

LOOOVE Ella's "Mack the Knife" but Jeffrey beat me to it!
Ella's Mr. Paganini... and Mack the Knife of course
The moment I saw this thread I thought of Jason Mraz and I'm glad someone else posted him! On his CD "live at java joes" he scats at least 40% of each song and it's so much fun.
I vaguely remember Jill Scott and someone else singing "Summertime" on that Bravo Special "Broadway's Best" and doing some scatting...maybe I'm just crazy.
I came with the intention to point you toward Ann Hampton Callaway, but I was beaten to the punch.

Garland Grrrl, I have seen Monheit live, at the Kennedy Center Terrace Theatre and thought she was terrific. Great chops, fabulous presence and had the audience eating out of the palm of her hand. What went wrong with her gig at McCarter?
well, for one thing she has married this guy that is a so-so drummer and he is now her musical director. subsequently the band was not so good and there were MANY drum solos. tedious drum solos. also, i really can't take the breathless mannerisms and exaggerated sexuality --the gasping and the constant clutch-the-breast, brush the hair out of the face, etc. she is not an intelligent singer, for me. and she can't really improvise. she has a nice presence and a pretty voice -- but that is not enough to go along with the hype for me. i'm sure she'll always have a following.

Jason Mraz
I've just finished sampling two of Jason's Cds and while he is a wonderful singer/songwriter with a terrific ability to make words sing, I did not here him scat once.
edit: wouldn't this thread be better off as an off-topic?

re Monheit: I am attending another concert of hers in Charlottesville this April and will update you. Sad to hear her new husband is not up to par as a musician. But I guess we will have to disagree on the quality of her singing. I think she's a one-of-a kind.
This is my favorite thread of the day! I have so many new cds to look into buying once I have money again!
yes, i wish this thread were off-topic but what to do.
cleo laine lived on my block for years. she and her husband now reside chiefly in the UK. she is elegant and down-home at the same time. i absolutely love her. one great example of her scatting chops is "Lo! Hear the Gentle Lark" on her cd with james galway. it starts off semi-classical and then she busts out in a thrilling display of vocal agility. the whole cd is wonderful, but that song is the highpoint.
i'm really quite interested in a young singer named lizz wright. her website has sound samples.

Garland Grrl, agreed on Cleo Laine. Her singing has no peer ... I have seen her in concert numerous times over a 30 year period and was able to share a great meal with her and Sir John some years ago. A great lady and a huge talent.
Doesn't Kristin Chenoweth do some scat-like stuff in "The Girl in 14G"? I think that's scatting. She even says a line: "She's scattin' like her name is Ella". That's a cute little song.
