Nominees are American Idiot, A Little Night Music, Fela, Promises Promises, Sondheim on Sondheim.
The Grammys realize that Memphis is garbage, why couldn't the Tonys?
ill be rooting for promises, promises personally. i love the orchestrations/score and honestly loved the show, unlike many. bring on the haters
I was hoping that Finian's Rainbow would get one....

'Memphis' won the Outer Critics' award for Original Score.
'Memphis' won the Drama Desk award for Outstanding Music.
'Memphis' won the Tony for Best Score.
So to me, it's the Grammys' omission that's 'garbage.'
^ Well, all 5 of the Grammy nominated albums have scores that were ineligible. Two are revivals, Sondheim on Sondheim is a compilation of Sondheim's music previously heard in other shows, and American Idiot and Fela weren't original scores written for the theatre. Memphis did not have a competition at the Tonys. It was up against the Addams Family and a bunch of plays (who were more deserving of the award). So the Grammy omission is hardly garbage. Memphis was extremely lucky to win those awards.
I'm surprised that Memphis was left out.
With no regard to whether you think it is a good score or not, it was a very well produced album which is what the Grammy's usually focus on.
AI was the best produced of the lot, but all the nominees are excellent in that regard.
I wouldn't be surprised if Promises wins though. Another chance to honor Bacharach.
So, the winners will be announced on Sunday! We already know that Barbra Streisand and Julie Andrews will receive special awards this year. And many folks are interested in the film-related awards, and many other categories, of course.
But which album will win the Best Musical Show Album Grammy?
The nominees are:
"American Idiot (Featuring Green Day)": Billie Joe Armstrong, producer (Green Day, composers; Billie Joe Armstrong, lyricist) (Original Broadway Cast With John Gallagher, Jr., Michael Esper & Others)
[Reprise]
"Fela!": Robert Sher, producer (Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, composer; Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, lyricist) (Original Broadway Cast With Sahr Ngaujah, Lillias White & Others)
[Knitting Factory]
"A Little Night Music": Tommy Krasker, producer (Stephen Sondheim, composer; Stephen Sondheim, lyricist) (2009 Broadway Revival Cast With Catherine Zeta-Jones, Angela Lansbury & Others)
[Nonesuch - PS Classics]
"Promises, Promises": David Caddick & David Lai, producers (Burt Bacharach, composer; Hal David, lyricist) (New Broadway Cast With Sean Hayes, Kristin Chenoweth & Others)
[Masterworks Broadway]
"Sondheim On Sondheim": Philip Chaffin & Tommy Krasker, producers (Stephen Sondheim, composer; Stephen Sondheim, lyricist) (Original Broadway Cast With Barbara Cook , Vanessa Williams, Tom Wopat & Others
[PS Classics]
Who will win???
American Idiot will win.
Ditto, it's the 1 award that Idiot has in the bag.
My vote goes to Finian's Rainbow (which didn't even get nominated).
Since it was the year of The Sondheim would be fun to see Sondheim on Sondheim or Night Music steal it. Especially since the Night Music recording improved upon that dreadful, misguided production.
Amen to that, Mildred. Finian's should have been nominated and won. Alas, the bigger names were nominated.
I let the Grammy Cast Album nominations and wins stop bothering me years ago. Those still bothered should give up on the real best winning or even being nominated.
