Nominations for the 53rd Grammy Awards will be announced tonight! Which cast recordings will be nominated for Best Musical Show Album? I have a few thoughts, included in my BWW column today:

If pressed, I will say that I believe "Memphis" and "American Idiot" will be nominated. I'm not sure about the other three slots. What do you think?

Sondheim on Sondheim, Fela! and Scottsboro Boys.
I don't know the 'politics' behind what cast recording gets nominated or not, but I think LA CAGE should be nominated.
I didn't mention it in my column, but I think that "Finian's Rainbow" has probably never sounded better. It's a very strong year for show music, and I have no idea which five will emerge!
I think American Idiot deserves it, definitely :)
My guesses are Memphis, American Idiot, Finian's Rainbow, and Sondheim on Sondheim. The 5th spot will go to either Promises Promises (my guess, but not my choice), Night Music (my choice), or Fela (thanks to its music industry producers).
Well some of us thought that about the Tony. we all saw how that worked out.
My Nominee Predictions: (and the order in which I believe they have a chance to win).
1. AMERICAN IDIOT
2. LA CAGE AUX FOLLES
3. MEMPHIS
4. SCOTTSBORO BOYS
5. BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON
Scottsboro isn't eligible this year. Eligibility ended on Sept 30. Scottsboro was released on October 12.

What's the policy on cast albums from London if the music is written by American writers and the lead performer is from the U.S. Sister Act, for instance (not that it would be nominated anyway). Does the album have to be produced here for it to be eligible?
MEMPHIS will probably win. The Best Musical winner almost always wins.

'The Best Musical winner almost always wins.'
2000: 'Annie Get Your Gun'
2001: 'Aida'
2002: 'The Producers'
2003: 'Hairspray'
2004: 'Gypsy'
2005: 'Wicked'
2006: 'Spamalot'
2007: 'Jersey Boys'
2008: 'Spring Awakening'
2009: 'In the Heights'
By my math, that's 6 times ouf 10 in the past decade.
I actually would give 'American Idiot' the edge to win.
It's Green Day, and it's based on a Grammy-winning album.
But I'm rooting for Bon Jovi's David Bryan for 'Memphis.'
I would think Fela will get a nom for a variety of reasons but definitely because of its producers. American Idiot, Fela, and Memphis would seem to be definite nominees even if just due to their rock/hip hop artist connections.
I'm saying American Idiot.

Nothing's definite. 'Next to Normal' won the Tony for Best Original Score, but wasn't even nominated for its cast album.
Ah, the Grammy Award for best cast recording... an even more meaningless award than Best Musical.
Statistically, the reigning Tony champ wins the Grammy almost exactly 50% of the time. And albums can be recorded anywhere to be eligible, as long as they are released domestically (not an import). However, a London original cast album has never (repeat, NEVER) won the Grammy.

Just curious. If the award for best musical is meaningless, what award would you consider meaningful?
If not Memphis, Scotsboro Boys should take the prize.
This award isn't meaningless to the producers of "Wicked." it's been in their ads for six years.

SCOTSBORO BOYS is not eligible this year....it had to be released by Sept 30th of this year to be considered.
"FELA" should get one of the nominations
However, a London original cast album has never (repeat, NEVER) won the Grammy.
Has one ever been nominated though?
NEXT TO NORMAL really wasn't even nominated? THAT'S comical!
I was very surprised about N2N last year. But yes, some LOCs have been nominated. Phantom lost to the Broadway Les Miz, I believe, and there have been others.
Mack & Mabel was nominated either. Starmites was
