it's the first time the score has been recorded as a major studio album since the movie (which is terrible)
the movie soundtrack terrible? exactly which movie soundtrack were you referring to because if you're referring to the 1958 motion picture soundtrack with Giorgio Tozzi and Mitzi Gaynor you need to get your ears checked....

Shannon Bo Bannon-
The glitch was on at least the inital pressed CDs, about 1:45 into "Part of Your World (Reprise)" there is a scruffy poppy noise. I remember a TON of threads complaigning about.

You know, I am confused too. Upon a little research, I can't find any evidence that a CD version of this "Mahagonny" performance is currently in print, if it ever was. And these are not music video categories, obviously.
I can't think of another instance where the "audio tracks" of a video release were nominated in a recording category. Though, if you were only nominating the sound and not the visuals, maybe there's nothing wrong with it.
All of the "product" that is nominated, no matter what category, is examined ("screened") by committees of specialists before it can even be listed as "eligible" to be nominated. So, maybe NARAS has opened itself up to a world in which the audio of anything can be nominated, like a commercial online posting, even. Downloads and all. I don't know. And maybe this is the first example of it. Because, it does sound pretty incredible.
I just can't find it in an audio-only format.
This is fascinating!

Posted: 12/4/08 at 12:15amI never noticed the glitch in the recording in the reprise of Part Of Your World until it was pointed out here. I then went back to listen to it and I did notice it and it is very annoying. I agree that I think that for that reason alone it shouldn't be qualified to be a Grammy nominee.

Really? so many of my fave cast albums would abeen disqualifiied then. When you'r erecording with a huge instrument, leads, in a limited time I find glitches pretty much boound to happen. I thinka s listeners we can often be too used to listening to the cleaness of pop recordings (I have a friend who freaks whenever he hears a page turn in the orchestrra)

Posted: 12/4/08 at 12:20amI don't think [title of show] was even considered because the recording was of their off-broadway run, not the show that ran at the Lyceum theater. It was released in 2006.

Posted: 12/4/08 at 12:40amOf the nominees, my vote would go for GYPSY. It has a rich, full-bodied sound, terrific performances and it includes the cut songs as bonus tracks. SOUTH PACIFIC is indeed more complete but sounds rather thin on CD. (It sounds great in the theatre.) I really do not find anything to enjoy in the score or performances of IN THE HEIGHTS. LITTLE MERMAID and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN don’t even deserve to be nominated.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I don't know if you were referring to Mahagonny or Gypsy, but per the Grammy website:
Mahagonny's categories
Field 30 — Classical
Category 98
Best Classical Album
(Award to the Artist(s) and to the Album Producer(s) if other than the Artist.)
and
Category 100
Best Opera Recording
(Award to the Conductor, Album Producer(s) and Principal Soloists.)
if you were referring to Gypsy, then you were right...
Category 81
Best Musical Show Album
(Award to the Album Producer(s), and to the Lyricist(s) & Composer(s) of 51% or more of a new score. (Artist, Lyricist & Composer names appear in parentheses.))

I really do not find anything to enjoy in the score or performances of IN THE HEIGHTS.
There's a difference between a score not being your personal style, and not being good. Their standards are not the same as yours.
