Also pls note the original poster's name is ooshizzz146
I think he is making fun of ooshizz with 2 z only. She's a female poster, (ooshizz146) who loves SPRING AWAKENING.. Poor Girl!

Grey Gardens is the "Follies" of this generation; in other words, a brilliant new musical that was not embraced by the mainstream public and/or significant theatrical community.
I am sick and tired of these superficial ninnies who whine about the flimsiness of the first act. Is every song a 10? No. But there is so much more than the songs to the entire show. SPRING AWAKENING is for the under-25 gay crowd or looks-like-they-are-gay crowd and their faghags.
And of course the gay theatrical mafia, who backed the show so that it swept the Tonys.

Posted: 4/29/08 at 4:36pmBORING? BORING?! Are you (sorry mods and puritans) F*CKING kidding me? A boring musical about old cat ladies? Is that a joke? And fflagg, I absolutely 101% agree with you, but I don't think Michael Riedel's gay. He's partially responsible too, aside from the gang at the Times.

I dunno how peeps think Gray Gardens should have won the Tony against Spring Awakening. There's no comparison.
What would you rather see? A boring musical about two old ladies who live with a bunch of cats or a totally sweet teen musical with rock music and naked hot people?
DUH!

I totally think Duncan Sheik wrote this show just for me. If you guys think this show is for everyone, you're wrong. It's all mine.

I just wish Matt Doyle would return his love for me. I send him love letter after love letter and still nothing. How long is this gonna take?

fflagg:
I do not fit into any of those categories, and I'll also be the first person to say that Spring Awakening is flawed as well.
The first act of Grey Gardens just did not work for me at all. Does every song need to be perfect, of course not.
As I sat in the theater watching that first act, I said to myself well, there's some good stuff going on up there, but I don't see why others are raving about it.
The end of that first act was so powerful, and effecting, but the level of writing in the first act did not come close to that, or much of the second act.
As a musician, the musical portion of a show clearly is a vital part of the show. Songs come about when words can no longer express what a character is saying/thinking. When most of these songs are weak, and a book that to me was a bit more than adequate (but still better than that of Spring Awakening), it just didn't "make the cut" for me.
These are all opinions obviously, and fflagg, I will not try to get into an argument about this, but why can a person my age, 21, not think a show like Grey Gardens is God's gift to musical theater for legitimate reasons and not stupid ones like "It's not cool" or it's not hip, or there's no sex, etc...
Edit: I hope you didn't compare Grey Gardens to Follies in terms of quality of the show, considering that every song in Follies is pretty much a masterpiece in and of itself.
If you're comparing it to the fact that it wasn't appreciated when it opened, but will be in due time, I think that distinction is much more appropriate for a show like Caroline or Change which was criminally under-appreciated when it opened, and I think will eventually be viewed much more highly.

On that note, I really hope everyone is having a swellerific Tuesday!!

Grey Gardens is such an underrated piece of art.
learn to appreciate that kind of stuff. it will be close to obsolete in a few years when all these closet gay teeny boppers are STILL obsessing over Spring Awakening and all of its predecessors.

Oh man...I do NOT think that Spring Awakening is God's gift to musical either.
I don't understand why thinking that Spring Awakening is a slightly better show than Grey Gardens makes me a "closeted gay teeny bopper."
Both my parents, and other people who are way out of the teeny bopper age felt the same way as I did regarding these two shows. These are all avid theatergoers and not once a year Mamma Mia type of theatergoers.
I still do not think that this is an issue of age where me being relatively young will therefore make me appreciate spring awakening more than grey gardens. My first show I ever saw was the Hal Prince production of Show Boat when I was 8 years old. How many people can say that?
I also don't think that over time I will come to "appreciate" Grey gardens any further. A flawed piece of work is just that. There are some cases where a flawed piece of work can still be successful or affecting, but I think that Grey Gardens has just too many flaws for it to become successful.
When I first saw Spring Awakening before it opened and all the hype and backlash, I thought it to be fresh, exciting, and entertaining. When I saw Grey gardens a few weeks later, it was much more a case of two extremely talented women taking a flawed, but often very good, piece of work to a higher level.
When I saw Spring Awakening for the second time a short while after the first time, I did not feel that same urgency of raw excitement, or freshness.
As time has progressed, my view of Spring Awakening has certainly lessened, but when push comes to shove, I still think that Spring Awakening is a better crafted show than Grey Gardens. However, this does NOT mean that I don't think that Grey Gardens is a work of art.

Normally I try to avoid threads like this, but I really feel like I need to say something. It is ridiculous that someone has made the choice to impersonate another poster, and it was an extremely immature move. The real ooshizz came here to talk about her thoughts on a Broadway show, which is the reason why this board was created. I for one am very happy that she decided to share her thoughts; I enjoy hearing other people's reactions to shows and how the show is doing.
The person who decided to impersonate ooshizz and make fun of her interests: you should be ashamed. It was a poor choice to mock someone based on their likes and dislikes. Personal taste is just that--personal. Everyone is free to like whatever they want, regardless of other's opinions on the subject. I am a huge fan of Spring Awakening, and I would be hurt if someone went to this level to make fun of me liking the show. It is my understanding that this board was created so that people could share their opinions on the pieces of theatre that they enjoy. If someone is just coming here to mock others on their interests, then they shouldn't bother coming at all.

Ah, the old SA vs. GG debate...I vividly recall an evening in December of '06 when a friend invited me to see "the best new musical of the season". I'd been keeping up with theatre trends and had heard that the show featured nudity, so I was there in a heartbeat.
Needless to say, I still feel burned. Mary Louise Wilson never once bared her bazongas.
