My school is putting on Grease and auditions are Tuesday. I have yet to pick a song for my audition. I want to do something from the show, but I'm not familiar with the music. I'm a soprano but jsut barely. Do you guys have any ideas? (I'd like to be Sandy. Is that role appropriate for my voice. If not, what is?)
Perhaps you shouldn't have waited to learn a new song two days before your audition.
Mr Tuttle, do you ever have anything positive to say? You make some very valid points, but your posts are so unnecessarily harsh.
First of all, one of my biggest pet peeves: it's "Grease!" not "Grease". Some shows just have an exclamation point. It's important. Like "Oklahoma!" or "Oliver!" The exclamation point is simply part of the title. I know the movie didn't use it, but that's the movie not the stage show. Don't forget the exclamation point. I apologize. Moving on...
Since you don't know anything from the show, I suggest you go with something you already know. Perhaps something you have sung before. Whether for an audition or a concert or whatever. Sing something you're familiar with. Unless they already asked you to sing something from the show it's never a good idea to sing a song for the show you're auditioning for. You could walk in and sing a song for a specific character and if they don't like it then they have it set in stone for you as that part and then may not even consider you for other characters. It's stupid, but it happens.
However, don't walk in and sing "Defying Gravity" or "Popular" or anything from WICKED. It's not a good idea. Why? Thirty other girls are doing the same thing. The director will shoot him/her self. Also don't go in and jump on the table singing "Out Tonight". I've seen it happen. Others have too. It's not pretty. If they asked you to sing a song from Grease! then you have some work to do, and not a lot of time to get it done. So hurry up.
But, stick with what you know. And try not to make a fool of yourself. You should be fine ... then I recommend picking up the original Broadway cast recording or the new-est Broadway cast recording with Brooke Sheilds. Both are great and will help you out if you do get cast.
Mr. Tuttle? Mr. Tuttle as in the teacher from "Saved by the Bell?"
2 days is cutting it a little close I think but that's not the point of the post. It may actually be better NOT to do a song from the show. Sandy can be done by a Soprano or Alto I believe. Sing what feels the best to you but I'm sorry I cannot give any recomendations.

Mr Tuttle- "Perhaps you shouldn't have..." is not a solution. Let's be in the business of solutions.
I can't know if the role is appropriate for your voice if I've never heard it, Lyte. And I don't know what version of GREASE! that your school is doing. I would recommend that you merely sing a song that you already know very well and enjoy singing. Whatever that means to you.
CATSNYRevival stop trying to be a know-it-all. The title of the damned show is "GREASE" without the exclamation point. That exclamation point was just added for the 1994 Tommy Tune revival, another revival was playing simultaneously in London around the same time and that production didn't use the excalmation point, so get it straight before coming on here and flaming someone unnecessarily.
If you need further proof just take one look at the movie you won't find one exclamation point after it's title, or do I have to play show and tell for you and start posting pictures to prove my point.
oh and the original stage production from 1972 didn't use the exclamation point either.
moving on. . . .

I didn't wait until two days before. I was working on Hoplessly Devoted to You since September when I found out we were doing Grease. Then I found out it wasn't in the version we were doing. We can sing anything we want to, but I want it to be from Grease(!). I may just stick with my original choice. Just for the record, nobody in my school would try Defying Gravity. If you say Wicked to them they just look at you with a blank face. Same goes for Phantom, Les Mis, Miss Saigon, RENT, anything.

hun,
a GRAT piece of advice I was given when is tarted auditioning -- NEVER sing something from the show you are auditioning for unless you are asked to.
thats what i was thinking myself bwayguy, but everyone i know is saying sing something from the show. hoplessly is a compromise, kinda, since its not in the show. I may do Beneath a Summer Sky. Idina Menzel sang it (didn't belt it) on the July 4th Fireworks Soundtrack. Is anyone familiar with that by the way?

if everyone else jumped off of a cliff, would you do it too?
It would help us if you told us what shows you have been in and the parts you play, as well as your vocal range.
Also- as a part time casting director I advise you DO NOT sing something from the show.

I've never been in a musical before. I've never had the opportunity. I've been a bunch of plays, but never a musical. I don't know my range notewise because nobody bothered to tell me and I dunno how to figure it out myself. I'll give an exampke of a role I can sing well. Maureen from RENT. I can do Elphaba minus those really high notes.
I didn't say everyone else was singing a song from Grease. I said people we're giving me advice telling that I should. I figured they didn't know enough and that's why I'm here.

helpful hint: sing what suits your voice the best....if thats 'hopelessly devoted' so be it.
Well, as of now, I'm gonna do Eden's part of Streetsinger from Brooklyn. Wish me luck!

Why not still do "Hopelessly Devoted to You"?
Why does it matter that it's not in the version you're doing?
If you do it well,.... heck, maybe they'll put it in!

Good point, Speed. However, the song is associated with Sandy, so you might run into the problems listed previously.
Whatever you choose, break a leg!
thanks guys!
Ohh! You should sing "I dreamed a dream"... And NEVER sing a song from the same show, the director knows how he wants the song and if you sing it a different way you may just get stuck in the Ensomble.. not saying that is a bad thing though...lol
Lyte, honey, here's what u need to do...it's never good to do a song from the show are auditioning for, it corners you into one role, one which the director may not even be considering you for.
If you have your heart set on one role, ie Sandy, do a song that is done by a similar type character. For example, Sandy is a young, naive, "goody goody" ingenue type. Find some songs that fit that type
It's always better to do a song that you are comfortable with, shows your range and let the director do what he may.
I don't care who I am in the show. As long as I'm in it, I'm happy. Of course, if I'm Sandy, I'm that much happier! It's not a heart set thing. I'll take any of the lead roles. Haha. Thanks for the advice luv. now, off to search the song books and then PRACTICE!
