I love the plaintive, wistful "Sweet River," cut from 110 IN THE SHADE;and two others I initially heard on the first "Lost in Boston" CD: "Dear, Sweet Sewing Machine (FIDDLER) and "When I Went Home (PETER PAN).
I also miss "Feeling Electric," which was an exciting number in NEXT TO NORMAL at Second Stage, but cut before it moved to the Booth.

The 'Ephram' monologue is perfectly placed about 3/4 of the way through. The contrast between this and 'Before the Parade Passes By', which I guess followed 'Love...' if the original song order was maintained, must have made for an even more exciting end to the 1st act.

I remember doing a community theatre production, and it was included in both the libretto and score (but ultimately cut from that production as well). I always found it a bit strange to have First and Last Midnight without a Second.

I think it was simply to shorten and tighten Act I--which plays as a farce, mostly, and it was seen as not the right time for a sort of moralizing song--which Act II has several of.
Being Alive is without question the more appropriate song, but I admit to loving Happily Ever After--and it's one of those random songs that pops into my head a lot (I have no clue what that says about me). I also *love* Bang! from Night Music (Although it's odd that Sondheim thinks it didn't make it past rehearsals when I have audio of it being performed in Boston...)
