Great Musical vs Great Play?

I'm not looking for any particular recommendations, just curious about which particular type of theatrical experience most BWW'ers would prefer if they had to choose one over the other.

For the record, I'd plump for a great musical every time. And if I'm being honest I've probably neglected seeing plays in favour of musicals over the years. I really enjoyed God of Carnage and Blithe Spirit last month and definitely plan to see more 'straight plays' in the future, but a good play just doesn't resonate me with me as much as an enjoyable musical. Thoughts?

Much the same as you Tigg. A good play stimulates my mind but rarely my emotions. A good musical can do both.

A musical comedy rarely makes me laugh as much as a good non-musical comedy - The Drowsy Chaperone being an exception (Scripps ducks to avoid the custard pies).

re: Great Musical vs Great Play?

Hmmm that is a tough one.

I saw around 40 musicals before I saw my first play, which was August: Osage County at the National and I was shocked at how much I enjoyed it. It opened the door for me to see more plays, and I have seen 3 more since (Gethsemane, The 39 Steps and For King and Country). None of those have matched my experience at August though, so I would say I would love to find another great play, seeing as though there are so many great musicals I have seen already.

However, I honestly don't think any play will match August for me, I was completely overwealmed.

re: Great Musical vs Great Play?

A great play, every time. Which is kinda weird; I've been a fan of musicals for years, and I wouldn't be the nerdy theatre fan I am today if it weren't for that. My iPod is filled with showtunes and I love being in musicals. But the turnover of plays and musicals in the West End means there's usually a much wider variety of plays to see (sure, there's plenty of musicals, but there's an array of longrunners and most musicals I'm sure hope to have open-ended runs rather than limited ones; compare this with plays, where there's only two real long-runners and a whole mess of limited runs, and there are WAY more plays available over an extended period of time than there are musicals). So I've seen a lot more plays, which has led me to a place where I genuinely get WAY more excited about plays.

Given the choice between seeing, say, Hairspray or Angels in America, I'd plump for the latter every time. Les Mis vs The Woman in Black? The play. Wicked vs War Horse? No brainer! Phantom vs The Mousetrap? Well, I'd probably cry off all together and go for a walk in the park. But you get my point; I'm a play person now, and long may it continue. Although I do just about remember to take in a musical every now and then as well. re: Great Musical vs Great Play?

Scrippsy, I think you'll find a good play can do both as well. In fact, War Horse is quite a bit like a musical in that it mayn't stimulate you intellectually, but if it doesn't stir you emotionally, you're obviously an unfeeling robot. re: Great Musical vs Great Play?

re: Great Musical vs Great Play?

Although I love a good play, musical theatre is my absolute passion, so I would always opt for a musical over a play - the combination of music, song and dialogue for me is just a more comnplkete experience. Also, I always find it hard to justify spending the same astronomical amount of money to see a play in the West End or Broadway as a musical.

Appreciate the replies so far. re: Great Musical vs Great Play?

I guess one advantage plays might have over musicals (aside from any artistic merit, obviously) is that tickets are possibly easier / cheaper to come by...

I only realised earlier that in several visits to New York in recent years I can only recall seeing two plays (November and Speed-The Plow - before things got fishy!) But on my most recent trip I ended up seeing more plays than musicals. I think I'm more open to the merits of non-musical theatre now and somewhat regret not seeing August:OC after hearing/reading so many raves. I have some free time in London in June and I think I'll try to get a ticket to War Horse, especially after reading Weez's description of it on here.

One question though: is there an Original Cast Recording available to buy in the theatre? re: Great Musical vs Great Play?

re: Great Musical vs Great Play?

I'm probably more of a plays person these days but see more musicals.
Now I'm no longer in town, trips are based around plays and fill in free slots with musicals.
Plus I'm a sucker for big name casting.
