Great Theatre Roles that Have Never Netted a Tony for their Performers

With Lauren Ambrose expectedly losing the Tony to the luminous Katrina Lenk, I thought it'd be fun to talk about brilliant theatre roles that are often so coveted and classic that most Broadway stars would kill to play them, and yet these roles have yet to garner a Tony Award for any of their performers.

Obviously this thread was inspired by Ambrose loss for playing Eliza Doolittle. Not even Julie Andrews was able to win a Tony for playing Eliza as she lost to another actress who had a role that was simply tailor-made to fit her unique and distinct and irreplaceable talents (Judy Holliday in Bells are Ringing).

Another role I came up with is the role of Lilly Garland in On the Twentieth Century. We all know the behind-the-scenes issues Madeline Kahn had when she played the role that may have played a part in her losing the Tony, but she was also up against Liza Minelli getting to essentially be Liza Minelli 8 times a week. Then Kristin Chenoweth gets some of the best reviews of the season or any season for her portrayal and loses to Kelli O'Hara who gave an award-worthy and very different performance in The King and I. Speaking of The King and I, it seems almost anybody who plays Anna wins a Tony Award, the opposite of this thread.

Any other examples?

Marvin in Falsettos comes to mind- both Michael Rupert and Christian Borle received nominations but didn't win. Tevye is another one- five Tevyes have been nominated and only Zero Mostel has ever won the Tony for it. I know that's not exactly the question this thread asks, but I thought it was an interesting statistic to include.

Georges from La Cage, Horace Vandergelder from Hello, Dolly!, and The King from The King and I have all been nominated twice in this category and never won, although Yul Brynner won for The King but in the Featured category, so that may not be applicable. I think Georges Seurat from Sunday in the Park has also lost twice.

I agree Wick3, Sunday...George's inclusion in last year's race would have actually made it really interesting. Particularly for Leading Actor and Revival. Speaking of which, was Scott Rudin even at the ceremony this year?

On-topic, the only one that comes to mind for me is Billy Bigelow. And- though I might be a tad biased- if they had pulled a "Larry Kert in Company" for 20th Century and made Judy Kaye eligible for Lily, I really think she'd have won. It's truly a "stuff of legends" story and every account I've read has described Kaye's turn as nothing short of starmaking.

No Billy or Julie has ever won for a Carousel production (always a revival since it debuted pre-Tony Awards). John Raitt won the Donaldson Award in '45 but that's it for leads. Only actresses playing Carrie have won so far (Audra McDonald and now Lindsay Mendez).
