Did anyone catch Grey Gardens on The Big Gay Sketch Show? heard there was a skit where they had Extreme Home Makeover doing Grey Gardens. Apparently Christine Ebersole recreated her Broadway role.
Current Saying: What do you mean it isn't enough being pretty? Have you seen my headshots?!?

Posted: 2/20/08 at 6:43pmOMG>>>Just watched it on Tivo...Brilliant! This show is off to a riotous start of new season, between the real Elaine Stritch and now Miss Ebersole recreating her Grey Gardens role in a devastatingly funny skit. Look for it in reruns. LOGO must be run by show folk!

This show is too often one missed opportunity after another... So many of their skits sound like GREAT ideas, but are only about 10% funny.
The Stritch and GG skits are perfect examples of this. And the "audience" just howls & howls sounding more like a laugh track than a real audience, even though they show a real audience. Ebersole just talks right over the laughter; there's none of the modulation like on a live-audience sitcom or SNL (where the performer pauses slightly or changes their pitch to compete with the laughs.) Mad TV has the same irritating problem usually too.
Sadly not very funny. (And the following Jenny Craig faux commercial was painful and too LOOOOOOONG. Was she really supposed to be playing Valerie Bertinelli??? Not even close; though the Kirstie Alley was pretty spot on.)

jp..though i agree with you about the elaine stritch sketch...i felt it fell flat once she showed up. They couldn't give her anything funny to say or do?
But...I thought the Grey Gardens sketch was very funny, however more to do with what was going on around Christine, not christine herself...

"Celebrating a birthday this week: Rene Descartes is 412! Do you know who he is? Then why are you watching this show? You could probably get into college and even get one of those job things. As for the rest of us; Amanda Bynes is 22! Yay!"

Got to see the sketch at a Company is on PBS party tonight! So funny I peed a little! Ok, I had some of the special punch already, but still... there was a little pee.
The Gay Werewolf should wake up as human while in the onstage audience at Xanadu now. I'd love to see him wake up next to the evil muses!

"I have also met him in person, and I find him to be quite funny actually. Arrogant and often misinformed, but still funny."

"So funny I peed a little." You'd have to be REALLY drunk to laugh that hard at that skit.

Humor is subjective. Having said that, I always love the "Stritchy" sketches and it was just so fun to see the actual Elaine Stritch show up. She seemed a bit out of it, and, judging by the editing, might not have been 'at her best' that day. The Grey Gardens segment was hilarious, if only for how great an idea it was. The whole "Sears" thing was dead on and properly spoofed.
WBAF, not sure your why you find the show 'offensive.' It's gay/lesbian humor, executed by gay/lesbian performers, and it mocks it's own, similar to "In Living Color."
Some of the stuff isn't funny, but that's the same with most other sketch comedy shows out there.
It would be great if it were taped "live" but that might be a product of the type of material they are doing, cost, or something else. All in all, there are some funny skits out there---I get a real kick out of SUPER LIZA!

"and it mocks it's own, similar to "In Living Color." "
Actually, ILC had straight people offensively trashing gay people (unfortunately a HUGE part of too many straight African-American male comics' routines), non-handicapped people parodying handicapped people, etc. Not exactly what I'd call mocking their own.

La Ebersole -- sheer genius perfection.

Posted: 2/29/08 at 2:26pmThat show is everything that Sketch Comedy is NOT supposed to be. I watched three episodes thinking "Oh man finally a sketch show starring openly gay performers!" and was disappointed again and again. I don't know if it's the writing or the performers, but it's all very high school talent show level of performing comedy. Lame and totally unfunny.
