Grinch Returning Next Season?

You're a Rich One, Mr. Grinch

Does the New York stage have another Christmas tradition on its hands?

It certainly looks that way, given the impressive performance of the new musical version of the Dr. Seuss classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Since beginning previews at Broadway's Hilton Theatre on Oct. 25, the family attraction has been packing them in. For the weeks ending Dec. 10 and Dec. 17, it pulled off the astounding feat of beating the usually unbeatable Wicked as the top-grossing Broadway show, pulling in, during the latter seven-day period, $1.7 million and filling 96 percent of its houses.

"We want to bring it back every season," assured Miller.

This is just what I was afraid of. It better not be in a Broadway house.

don't no about every year but it will probally return in 2 or 3 years. the problem is lack of theatre space.

re: Grinch Returning Next Season?

What is the problem with something like this? A show opens in a theater that would be dark otherwise, a show that is family-friendly, potentially bringing in an audience that otherwise would not come to Broadway. Not to mention that it employs a whole slew of actors for the holidays.

What a terrible idea. We don't want that kind of crap on Broadway. *eye roll*

Exactly timote316! I have been getting so annoyed with people being upset by the success of a show that may not be their cup of tea! Get a grip people!

I didn't get to see the show, is it one that can fit into any house? There's always at least one dark theatre during the holidays, so I'm assuming they'll try to squeeze it in. Or, it'll go into Theatre at MSG if Annie doesn't come back next year.

If probably will return. It raked in a huge amount of money. The only reason it wouldn't come back is if there is no theater space for it.

re: Grinch Returning Next Season?

You read my mind, Producer2...if The Grinch returns (which it very likely will) they will probably choose a more reliable venue where they can be sure to have a home year after year. My first thought was A Christmas Carol at Madison Square Garden...I can see The Grinch doing the same thing.

MSG has the partnership with Cirque du Soleil for a winter-themed show started next year. Will run for 10 weeks and have a 4 year run.

Ugh! Cirque du Soleil will take over the world!

I could def. see it returning. I think after it's success at the Hilton, the producers wouldn't want to move it to a smaller house, but they might settle. I don't like the idea of moving it off-Broadway into the MSG. I think it's a Broadway tradition, and leave it on Broadway. Maybe they can house it at the Times Square Church? Well, one can dream.

What I don't understand is that Cerq du soli sp? comes to town during its tour ever year. It plays Randall's Island. I don't know why it has to come twice a year. But, I think that Annie was a one time thing and most of the time, theatre at MSG is empty at this time of year so it would fill it up. I think it should go there. Or at least if not there then it should go into a theatre that is dark.

That said, it might be better at a smaller house, if it wants to turn a profit. As well as ticket sales have been, it will not recoup, according to a recent Playbill article. If (when) it returns, expect a somewhat downsized version, one that makes it easier to turn a profit on.

re: Grinch Returning Next Season?

There is speculation for The Grinch to return next year. Rumors are they are looking at MSG and The Beacon Theater as possibilities.

re: Grinch Returning Next Season?

timote316- Grinch only had an 11 week run, of course it won't recoup this season. There is no way it will be downsized and I'm sure it will also be looking for the biggest theatre it can find when it returns next year. I would also not be surprised to see at least one touring company.

re: Grinch Returning Next Season?

I think next year if they find a big enough space they should just full out hire two companies and run shows all day like the Rockettes. I don't even know if the Hilton was big enough to contain this show. It was a madhouse when I went to an 11 AM Thursday performance.

I wasn't in love with the show, but bringing it back somewhere empty every year is good news for actors, stage managers/crew, and more.

Not on Broadway but at the Beacon. That is what they want to do so they the contracts are different.

re: Grinch Returning Next Season?

I didnt realize it was that "big" of a show. I guess the producers must have know they weren't going to recoup.

re: Grinch Returning Next Season?

The Beacon is a non union house, so they could save a small fortune there!!!

re: Grinch Returning Next Season?

Just because The Grinch isn't intellectually enthralling, it's a lot of fun for children. And I'd rather give up the largest house on Broadway to introduce one child to theater and spark an interest than see another one of John Doyle's fascinating Sondheim shows.

re: Grinch Returning Next Season?

The plan/hope was always to have it become a holiday tradition a/la "Christmas Carol." I don't know about a tour though. The Globe in San Diego still has a contract with the show for a few more years.
