The Donmar production has opened to rave reviews and sellout performances in Australia.

"Why did this production not materialize on Broadway," I wonder out loud.
I will reiterate: the apparent plan was to tour in Australia till the fall of this year then open in NYC in the winter. It seems Des and the Nederlanders jumped the gun and got in first with their trainwreck
Keep rubbing salt in the wound.
I said it from day one - this art work sucks.

I assume those people are all "stars" in Australia?

Biggest stars in TV, Film and stage in the one production. Melbourne season grossed $12 million (AUD) alone, Sydney will be much less because it's a smaller season and economic climate went downhill since the Melbourne season.

I am sure there was a UK tour at the same time as the London production so aren't there two sets (or there were maybe)
Yep, it played Cardiff , Birmingham and a few other dates.
The four you see in the picture below are the original Donmar/Piccadilly cast.
Ewan McGregor
Jane Krakowski -needs no introduction.
Jenna Russell -recently on Broadway in 'SITPWG'
Doug Hodge -currently recieving rave reviews for 'La Cage' in London and is due to bring the show to New York in the next 12 months!
Not a bad cast you have to admit.

Wait! They're gonna bring "La Cage" back to Broadway again? Say whuh?
Whilst I thought the Donmar production was fantastic (and it was so much better in the auditorium than any TV representations of it on ebutuoY) I can't help wondering if it would have been greeted on Broadway with a similar reaction to the Donmar-esque treatments of Gypsy and Follies?
Producer, Sonia Friedman (sister of Maria) is in negotiations to take the current production to New York earl 2010.
I guess we'll never know if the Donmar production would have been a success or not in NY. But it seems to be doing very well in Australia.
In all honesty, even though I'm not in New York, when this was announced, I really thought "what are they thinking?". Then I saw clips of the Donmar production, and I thought "OK, if this goes on, I can see it". But now... even looking at the curtain call pictures posted here was boring.
Back to my 1992 cast recording...
The Sydney season opens March 12th, the Melbourne season opened March last year and was a huge success selling out the Princess theatre for most performances till around the first preview of Wicked...
Magde is once again playing a male role like she did in the MTC's Australian premiere of "Spelling Bee"
Same song different cast. Australian cast perform Sit Down You're Rockin' The Boat at the 2008 Helpmann Awards:

Marina Prior (Adelaide) shot to "stardom" in Australia at the age of 19 when she was chosen to play Mabel in the original Australian production of the NY Shakespeare Festival interpretation of THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE. Since then she has appeared in shows such as THE SECRET GARDEN, ANYTHING GOES and was the first Australian Christine in THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.

Why couldn't we get this production?

It was rhetorical.
I actually saw this in Melbourne (quite an experience with champagne AND ice cream at my seat). I thought it was a good production, except that ALL American jokes (get off at Saratoga) were missed by the audience, I was the only one laughing at some points. Also, the actors, Skye specially, would let his Aussie accent slip a few times.
