JACKMAN TO MAKE GUYS AND DOLLS MOVIE
HUGH JACKMAN will begin shooting a movie version of musical GUYS AND DOLLS next year (07), once a director has been found. The actor - who has an impressive stage resume in musicals THE BOY FROM OZ and OKLAHOMA! - wants to cash in on the success of musical movies CHICAGO and MOULIN ROUGE!. He says, "We're looking for a director and I reckon we'll be ready to go in a year or so."

Miramax of course optioned the rights to this film around the time they were big into musicals after CHICAGO. I'm not sure who kept the rights in the "divorce" - Disney or the Weinsteins. Rumoured to be interested in the project were Nicole Kidman, Renee Zelwegger and Vin Diesel.
It could be fun with the right director. Hopefully they won't try to modernize it.

Sky = Hugh
Sarah = Nicole
Nathan = Vin
Adelaide = Renee
Then everybody's happy!
Except I'm not sure I wanna hear Hugh sing those songs. He's not exactly a crooner type. Hopefully it won't be "nails on a chalkboard" time.

Nathan was virtually a "non-singing" role in the original show. "Sue Me" (a duet with Adelaide) was his only featured song. It was written that way for original star Sam Levene, who was tone deaf. Listen to the OBCR, and you'll see what I mean. He hits... some of the notes, occasionally.
...Which made Frank Sinatra a logical choice to play Nathan in the movie.
*typed with much sarcasm*
EDIT: Thanks for the spelling catch, Tom14850!
By the way, that's not a matter of opinion that he was tone deaf. They all knew it and played up on the fact in the original production. Frank Loesser wrote "Sue Me" (and it was orchestrated) so it didn't matter if he hit any of the notes.

It's Sam Levene, not Levine
After seeing Chicago, I don't want to see Renee Z in ANYTHING and Kidman is totally wrong for the role of Sarah. Why not Nathan Lane for Nathan Detroit, especially if they use the songs added for the original film version?

Sky = Hugh
Sarah = Julia Roberts
Nathan = Kevin Spacey
Adelaide = Nicole Kidman

They should use the songs from the show. I like "Adelaide" and "Pet Me Poppa"...but I saw a production of it and realized how much better the original songs were.
And no no no to Vin Diesel, IMO. I think John C. Reilly would make a great Nicely Nicely.

I think John C. Reilly would make a great Nicely Nicely.
I actually thought about that. I just wonder if he has the range for it. Unless they take "Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat" way down, I am not sure he could sing the top line.
Now, I think that Jack Black as Nicely and John C Reilly as Benny Southstreet could be a pretty amusing duo.
I have no problem with Vin Diesel being in the cast as long as it's as Big Jule.

The Vin Diesel Musical Extravaganza
Posted by Clint Morris on March 15, 2006
Vin Diesel considers himself a bit of a music-man, and has long favoured the idea of doing a remake of “Guys and Dolls” – yeah, the old Marlon Brando thing – at one-stage even trying to coax Nicole Kidman into getting behind his idea, and appearing in a redo with him.
According to Sky.com, the hairless hero is still pretty keen to do the film, and now that it’s gearing up – as a vehicle for Catherine Zeta Jones, no less – he’s out to let the decision-makers know that he’s their man.
“This is the role of a lifetime”, says Diesel, currently appearing with wig in “Find Me Guilty”. “I know I can pull it off”.
Apparently he has already taped himself in character as the film’s Sky Masterson, sort of an impromptu audition reel, in the hopes that producers will see that he has what it takes.

Posted: 5/26/06 at 11:14amYeah, I was gonna say, in every interview I've seen Diesel talk about this project he's said he wanted to play Sky, not Nathan.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

Vin would make a good Big Jule. I agree with that.

Here's another one from last year from the same site that posted the Jackman story:

WILLIAMS TOUTED FOR GUYS AND DOLLS
Movie actor VIN DIESEL hopes to cast British pop hunk ROBBIE WILLIAMS in his long-awaited remake of musical classic GUYS AND DOLLS.
The burly hunk has been planning to film a new version of the musical, 50 years after the original version was released.
The PITCH BLACK action star also plans to star in the musical comedy as New York gambler SKY MASTERSON, the part originally played on screen by late movie legend MARLON BRANDO.
Williams, who created a 'Rat Pack' style image for himself for his 2002 release SWING WHEN YOU'RE WINNING, is in the running to play FRANK SINATRA's part NATHAN DETROIT.
Diesel says, "I was thinking of doing Sky Masterson and having Robbie as Nathan Detroit, which is also a fun part.
"These films take a while to put together, but hopefully the project will happen sooner rather than later."

Oh, Lord. Why do non-singing actors always want to play Sky?? Isn't it bad enough we had to suffer through Brando the first time? We need a remake with a Sky who can sing!
(I'm not bitter about my favorite song being cut out of the score because Brando couldn't sing it. Oh, no.
)
#18re: Guys & Dolls Movie?
Posted: 5/26/06 at 11:40amFrankly, I totally forgave Brando not being able to sing because let's face it... The man was probably the sexiest actor of all time. But Vin... Oh golly. As Maria would say, "Make it not be true."

This is from 2003:
http://tinyurl.com/lkyby
Actor VIN DIESEL is being advised to hold off sharpening his vocal chords for a role in movie musical GUYS AND DOLLS - because producers haven't given him a deal yet.
The X star has spoken about his plans to appear in the big screen remake, but NEIL MERON and CRAIG ZADAN insist they've struck no deals with the bulky New Yorker.
Zadan says, "Oh God. Vin Diesel. We'd better clear this one up.
"He have interviews saying that he and NICOLE KIDMAN were doing Guys and Dolls. We met him socially, but that's all.
"We're in the process of closing a rights deal now, and we can't make a commitment to any actor yet."
From 2004:

Hollywood star JOHN C REILLY has shamelessly urged MIRAMAX movie-makers to recruit him for their big screen version of GUYS AND DOLLS.
The character actor, who starred in the studio's CHICAGO and GANGS OF NEW YORK, spent his early career on the stage in musicals like JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF and BRIGADOON - and he's eager to show off the skills required for these shows once again.
He says, "Guy And Dolls - that's my favourite. I know Miramax are supposed to be doing the movie of it and boy I want to be in on that, because I just love it."
The OSCAR-winning CHICAGO producers say they're a month away from closing the rights deal - and it's still an open question as to who will takes on the roles of New York gamblers NATHAN DETROIT and SKY MASTERSON, played by FRANK SINATRA and MARLON BRANDO in the 1955 feature.

Best12, you don't want to hear Hugh sing these songs but you don't mind Vin? Hugh did fine with "Oh What A Beautiful Mornin'".

Been there, done that...
How about Nicole Grillos as Adelaide, I think she played it in the Greece leg of the European Tour...
