The Odd Couple looks like a done deal, and the names I keep hearing are Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert. The pairing makes sense on paper: two Daily Show alumni with real chemistry.
Roundabout’s slot is the one I’m most curious about. The Full Monty is still listed on their site, but almost nobody I talk to thinks it’s going forward. The two names floating for the house: a Rhinoceros with Paul Giamatti, or a return of Rebecca Frecknall’s Streetcar with Paul Mescal back as Stanley. Mescal already brought it to BAM, so a proper Broadway run would feel like the natural next step. Giamatti in Ionesco would be a much stranger and more interesting swing.
Mischief Theatre might be lining up The Comedy About Spies from the West End once A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong finishes in LA. Their brand has a real New York audience after The Play That Goes Wrong and Peter Pan Goes Wrong, so I’d say this one has legs.
All My Sons with Bryan Cranston is still stuck in the triple bind: money, stars’ calendars, and a theater. After the London run, a New York transfer seemed like a given, but any one of those hurdles can stall a play for a season. All three at once is a lot.
Off-Broadway transfers: I’d bet on at least two of Spring Awakening, Benjamin Button, and The Heart landing on Broadway within a year of closing. Spring Awakening is the wild card for me since it’s already had two Broadway lives, so the pitch has to be about this production, not the title.
Birthright is out raising money for a transfer.
Black Swan is also courting investors, but from what I’m hearing, it’s been a tough sell.
Revivals: The 42nd Street talk has gone quiet since the Sarah Jessica Parker rumor, but it's next season now...
The new one is Annie Get Your Gun with Kelly Clarkson, which I’m skeptical of. She wrapped her talk show to spend more time with her kids after their father’s death, and I’d expect that to mean a year or two away from a steady gig.
