Posted: 11/5/07 at 4:44pmShut your mouth, Matt, around here the first two would be cause for much hysteria.

you guys are so sarcastic. What would you rather? That they revive Sunday In The Park With George?
It'll never happen.
#53re: Gypsy IS happening
Posted: 11/5/07 at 4:48pmTaz, it could work if Doyle directs and the actors do all their own painting.

Posted: 11/5/07 at 4:48pmI really liked Tony Yazbeck as Tulsa! I thought he was unlike any Tulsa I had ever seen. His sex appeal and general manliness made him this object of lust for Louise that was so effective. It made his desertion for June all the more devastating, and one could really sense Louise questioning her "womanliness" in the face of Yazbeck's Tulsa, leading to her eventual assertion of her OWN sex appeal as a stripper. I feel like Tulsa is always just the most talented of the chorus boys in any production, and while this is another valid interpretation, Yazbeck really clarified the attraction between Tulsa and Louise for me.

I'm guessing you didn't see Robert Lambert.

"I still think Benanti was an ahole for making those comments, but I admitted she was a wonderful Louise after saying she was too old and crabby."
What did Benanti do? I'm slow on the gossip around here.

Hopefully, Raul can play Sweeney and Manoel will play Bobby. The audience will be seated on stage and the orchestra will perform from the audience. All the actors will double as set pieces. I'm thinking Susan Anton as the barber chair simply so I can see what happens when they have to stop the show because her shoe got caught in herself.
Naturally, Follies will be a one-man show starring Nathan Lane with the Gypsy Kings in the pit. I can see the marquee now:
"Nathan Lane as Follies
with The Gypsy Kings
choreography by Michael Flately"
If they're smart, concert versions will be performed at Ravinia just before the concerts in NY followed by a festival at Lincoln Center just before they open on Broadway and then tour. By the end of the tour, we should all be chomping at the bit for the next revised/recast/reconceptualized/reorchestrated version of the same shows. Again.

I love how people are trying to turn this into yet another Benanti bash thread.
I have my fingers crossed for this one. She'll finally get that TONY she deserves.

Maria Friedman in WOMAN IN WHITE and Jenna Russell in SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE cannot be compared though. WOMAN IN WHITE was disliked by critics and audiences, the show itself was not necessarily an effective Tony award-vehicle. Plus, given Friedman's battle with cancer she had to be out of the show on a constant basis which could have hurt her chances.
Jenna Russell is making her Broadway debut in a show that is considered one of the most brilliant of the cannon, in a production that has great buzz from the West End (unlike WOMAN IN WHITE), and in a performance that beat the likes of Tonya Pinkins' brilliant turn in CAROLINE OR CHANGE for the Olivier Award. She is definitely a strong contender and presents serious competition to LuPone--if the GYPSY rumors are true.
Faith Prince got positive notices across the board for A CATERED AFFAIR in San Diego so she is another one to look out for. In other words, LuPone does not have the Tony in the bag as everyone seems to think (remember the '06 awards?).
Now, Laura Benanti SHOULD get the Tony, her performance as Louise was insanely fantastic and I hope Leigh Ann Larkin gets a nomination.
What does this mean for Laura Benanti's show on ABC though?

Ya, but Idina Menzel also beat her...

Let's see, Les Mis closes in January. Maybe they'll revive the revival again in April.
And if it closes on opening night, maybe they'll revive it again mid-May! Best Revival of a Revival.
What about Grey Gardens!? It's been long enough now. Bring it back with Manoel Esparza and Patti Benanti as Little Eva Peron!
SO excited. Really.

Well, if the voters aren't high when they're filling out their ballots, Boyd Gaines and Laura Benanti should think about making some room on their mantles for Best Featured Actor in a Musical and Best Featured Actress in a Musical respectively. And while she faces competition from Jenna Russell and possibly Faith Prince, Patti LuPone should think about making some room too. The Tony voters, besides honoring a great performance that took more than one viewing to fully understand, should consider Ms. LuPone's dedication to the revival of Sweeney Todd (besides her stellar performance) and LaChanze's lack of that. And unless John Doyle completely outdoes him, Arthur Laurents might want to make a little room too.
"Benanti said she doesn't listen to message board postings."
Yeah, but she kind of went on about how we all bash LuPone, Murphy, Ebersole and all of the beloved divas. That sort of pissed me off as I never bashed any of them, but the feeling of being miffed didn't last too long. I'm not the entire message board.

The thought of Patti not winning a Tony for this performance should Gypsy transfer sends chills down my spine.
I've dealt with Sweeney, but her Momma Rose was thousands
better than her superb Mrs. Lovett.

And while she faces competition from Jenna Russell and possibly Faith Prince
Prince is some tough competition.
#72re: Gypsy IS happening
Posted: 11/5/07 at 8:30pmWell, if she does lose, it'll likely be to Prince, Russell and O'Hara and Prince is apparantly superb, Russell is superb and O'Hara will likely be superb. It's not like she'd lose to LaChanze. Don't get me wrong, I'm hoping she wins. If they have more rehearsal time before the show opens, she'll likely be even better than she was at City Center.

IF and it is a very large IF this happens and IF Benanti is involved (she has told friends, she is through with live theatre)
She faces very stiff competition. Hoffman, Testa, Scott.Kritzner.Martin,Foster etc. and she faces the Ezparsa factor, not well like in the theatre community.
Best of luck.
