Posted: 2/2/04 at 7:29pmI've been listening to my cast recording since I heard. I'm depressed. Laugh if you will, but this was the first production of "Gypsy" I've ever seen. This will always be my favorite musical.

Taboo and Gypsy are really not part of the same trend, closing for two very different reasons.
Taboo's millieu is too rarified for the mainstream, and had mostly downbeat reviews; a toxic combo. Gypsy, brilliant though it is, is an over-exposed piece of material by now, with a major revival on b'way in the past decade (the Tyne vesion). And it stars a theater star who only recently appeared for a year ("Annie Get Your Gun.") No matter how high the quality, there was nothing must-see about it for a wider audience (the way "Cabaret" boldly re-examined its sexuality, and "Nine" offered a movie star, at least for a while.
The controversy re Peters' spin on Rose filled seats with die-hard fans for the first 3 months, but ultimately was very inside, not buzz-worthy to the general audience. I always thought it returned too soon; perhaps this proves that.

Posted: 2/2/04 at 7:47pmI wasn't comparing them, I was just answering Corine2's question. Their closings definitely do fall into completely different categories.

Perhaps there shouldn't be a revival every 14 years. Maybe they should withhold it from Broadway for a while to build up a bigger following.
Next Momma Rose: Idina Menzel (Hoping that by that time she's a theatre star such as Lansbury, Merman, Peters, and Martin.

Ha-Ha. Oh my. Almost funny.
Anyway. I think Idina could do Momma Rose. She looks like she could play the ball breaker type of a role, such as the way Angela Lansbury, Ethel Merman, and Tyne Daly played the role. And there's of course no denying that she's got the voice for the role.

Posted: 2/2/04 at 10:24pmI have a good feeling that the news of Gypsy closing will boost ticket sales and sell out for the next month and it will stay open longer.

Posted: 2/2/04 at 10:30pmWell, my friends and I might be catching this soon. How is Row D in the Mezz. on the right? I sat on the right mezzanine (almost on the end) before, but I was closer (row B). Row D shouldn't be bad, right? Updated On: 2/2/04 at 10:30 PM

I'm very saddened for the performers, who have worked incredibily hard to make a revival comeback. When a door closes another one opens and hopefully for the better.
I am happy that the show is closing. I'm sure we will see another version in twenty years and Liza will be 85 playing the part of Mamma Rose.

And to think John Dossett knocked back Assassins, is too late for him to change his mind?
La Cage at the Shubert? That could be nice.

Sorry I'm a bit late...
Idina definately has the voice. And I would like to see her challenge herself with something like this, but she doesn't seem like the type. Maybe she's a bit young? I don't know.

I will get tickets to the last performance. I can't believe it. The only good thing is anticipating Bernadette Peter's next move!

quote"localonecrew....it doesn't bother you that you're making a statement such as that while all those people ( well over 100) will be out of the job?
"
doesnt bother me one bit because there is always another show right behind it ready to open and take its place.

Posted: 2/3/04 at 12:03pmInteresting, contemplating Peters' next move. From a strictly biz standpoint, I think she may be overexposed on b'way, after two Merman revivals back to back. Time to start from scratch with a new role, in which she won't be compared with anyone, or maybe even do a non-singing part. Or, more likely: more film roles. Rose is her first "grown-up" role -- the first time she hasn't used the big hair, the diva persona. What will continue to stretch her?

Auggie27, I agree with you. It's been mentioned that BP came to broadway too early after ANGYG. But the thing is, she IS a broadway actress, and broadway actresses really make a career on broadway. Her hollywood career never really "took off." I'm assuming she'll rest her voice for the next couple months to a year, but what will she do next?
Sing? Concert specials? She's definately not over-the-hill.
But unfortunately I don't see her coming to broadway any time soon ![]()
