Every cast album producer has his/her likes and dislikes. The greatest of them all, Goddard Lieberson, didn't like all that much dialogue on cast albums, yet he's the man who recorded A Thurber Carnival, Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf, Luv, and others.
I've always included a goodly portion of dialogue on my albums, especially Little Me, where I felt that what was special about the production was Martin Short and we tried to put as much of him and Mr. Simon's terrific comedy on the album. With The King and I, I insisted on having the fellow who played the Kralahome on the album - no Kralahome had ever been on a King and I album, and yet it's a leading role in the show. Plus I thought Randall Duk Kim (I hope I got the name right) was brilliant, so we found a way to get some of him on the album, along with the entire "letter" scene, which had never been recorded before, but is an integral part of the score.
But for some shows, less is more. It all depends on the sensibilities of the producer and then the artistic team sort of has to go along with it.

obert Sher could take a lesson from Thomas and listen to the Jay David Saks Gypsy and see where he went wrong.
- What are you talking about? Have you heard the new Gypsy yet? NO. You've heard a 5 track sampler. How do you know there won't be dialogue. And for your information, they recorded the finale of the show like Bernadette's Gypsy.

Posted: 7/2/08 at 8:02pmI never claimed to have heard the new CD. And I'm actually pretty pleased with the Jay David Saks CD in terms of content. My biggest complaint is just the beginning of "All I Need is the Girl". It starts very abruptly with "Well, Louise..." and sounds as if it just cuts into underscore that has been playing for a while and it doesn't flow well from the previous track. It would have been nice to have just included a line or two of dialogue to set it up as is included on the Bette Midler soundtrack.

You're right, you're not. And neither is H. Higgins, who I got a very nice note from. I know who Mr. Sher is, both personally and on this board :) I'm looking forward to the CD very much - I have every Gypsy recording - it's my favorite score of all time, and Miss LuPone is terrific, and I adore Laura Benanti, and know several others in the company. And August is just around the corner - I don't know how that happened, actually, since the last time I looked it was 2007. Where has this year gone???
