That is, as opposed to a show like American Idiot, which was based on a "concept album" that was primarily intended to exist as a mainstream punk rock album. So I can't imagine the Tonys would disqualify the Hadestownscore based on the concept album."
Ah, I didn't know about the early developmental work for the stage production. Thanks! I hope it's eligible.
By the way, on this subject... I just stumbled across the fact that Rodgers & Hammerstein were posthumously nominated for Best Original Score for STATE FAIR in the 1990s, over 50 years after most of the songs were written. Crazy!!
I bet this lands at the Imperial next spring ...CITS is too small for this musical that will most likely WIN Best Musical!
pretty sure the rules for a certain percentage of the score being newly written for the stage came after State Fair because it would make no sense for that rule to have been in place. Even still, I would be surprised if the concept album’s material was more than 50% of the score, there’s a LOT of material in the show (at least in its production at the NYTW) that was not on that album (and about 20 minutes of material has still not been on either album, a fact that still irritates me since they should have just released the entire live recording)

Imperial is around 1400 seats. No chance. That’s way too big. Look for this one to wait for a 1000 seat theatre to open up.

I heard nothing but good things about the Edmonton run, Reeve included.

Yes, but can he sing the part as written? (A genuine question; I didn't see him perform it in Edmonton.) It's such a strange vocal part with so much controlled falsetto and other oddities, and while I'm not too familiar with Reeve Carney's past work and I feel bad for asking, all I can hear in my head is Carlotta sniping, "Reeve Carney--'e doesn't 'ave ze voice!" I love the off-Bway recording so much that I hope I won't be comparing it the whole time to whoever the Bway Orpheus ends up being...
Andre de Shields as Hermes seems to indicate a change in how that character was depicted.
(Also- he's a Broadway legend. Way for that BWW article to bury that lede and then not even bother to link his name like the other principle actors).
Right? For me, seeing that De Shields is joining the cast is the most exciting part of this announcement. The wicked authority he always brings will be great for Hermes. Incidentally, he did a reading as Hermes sometime between the Off-Broadway run and the Edmonton production. At the time, I was really hoping he would become a "Hadestown" fixture, but when the Canada cast was announced, that did not appear to be in the cards. So glad he is going to part of this amazing line-up.

Disappointed with Reeve as Orpheus - he had a lot of trouble with the score in Edmonton and I didn't like the direction they took the character with his casting. More dusty, down-on-his-luck, but nice guy, rather than the charismatic, genuine, but a little bit of devil-may-care I got off the live cast recording. And his voice, imo, is nowhere close to the gorgeous bell-like quality of Damon's that really sells Orpheus as someone with a true gift.
That being said, happy with a new direction for Hermes, that element always felt like it wasn't quite working on the same level as some of the other characters. And Eva is an exciting development (though I've not had an issue with any of the past Eurydices) and glad to see Amber and Patrick confirmed.

Doesn't matter who plays him, Orpheus is the most bland, boring character in the show. At least he was at NYTW.

I have been listening to the Hadestown album since its beginning. Having seen the initial NYTW production and the production in Edmonton, I can say with certainty that it will be well received on Broadway. Not only was there a major restaging, the addition of Reeve was a great decision. When the National Theatre production was announced, I worried that I would miss out. Thrilled to have just found a weekend in November that works and very inexpensive airfare from NY. The thought of seeing its various incarnations in different cities brings a smile to my face. For anyone who has not seen the show, it is simply wonderful. When the cast sang "Wait for Me II" in Edmonton I got chills and teared up at the same time. It's one of the few times that has ever happened to me in the theater. Patrick Page and Amber Gray are amazing in their roles. Anais Mitchell has written a show that will leave NY theatergoers feeling many emotions when it opens.
Never thought I'd use a fan letter as a source, but Amber Gray says in a letter she wrote that Hadestown is coming to Broadway in the Spring. She could of course be misinformed, but still interesting.
