Just wondering if anyone knows what's really happening with the closing of HAIRSPRAY and the rumored return of Harvey as Edna?
Broadway.com has an article that makes it sound like it's official, with Harvey returning Novembe 11th and a closing date of January 18th. Yet there are no comments from Marc, Scott or any of the show's producers confirming it. Broadwayworld.com's article hasn't been updated since Thursday, when it said 'all indications' point to a January closing with Harvey reprising his Tony winning role. And another post on here, supposedly from Harvey's Facebook account, says he has YET to sign a contract for his return.
What gives? Someone please tell me it really is closing on January 18th and Harvey really is coming back. I've already bought my tickets (wouldn't another show wanting to get into the Neil Simon by spring make an extension hard anyway.. and during the lean winter months no less!) We die-hard HAISPRAY fans are already heartbroken that our big girl is packing up and moving away. We can't take another blow and find out the whole Harvey thing is just a rumor. He IS Edna.. and she nees to be there January 18th at 6:30 to put her big girl to sleep one final time.

That one has comments from Marc.
Although the website is still selling past January 18th. I don't know if it just hasn't been updated or what...

The January 18, 2009 closing date is the set tentative date which is why TicketMaster is still selling tickets for dates after that.
Yes, HAIRSPRAY is indeed closing on Broadway... just not on January 18, 2009. It is expected to extend a few times before the actual final performance.
Word of advice to those jumping to purchase tickets for January 18, 2009. Don't. This is one you'll have to catch a release of tickets as they most likely won't announce the 'official' final performance date until the week prior.

Didn't someone post a facebook update from Harvey in which he said that he hadn't signed anything yet and that it wasn't a done deal?
Either way, I highly doubt they'll close Jan. 18th. However, I imagine their closing will have to depend on whenever GUYS & DOLLS (or another production) books the theatre and expects to start running.

Posted: 10/4/08 at 4:47pmWhy would extend further in January and then on into the very lean months of February and March if the show is closing for financial reasons? That makes very little sense. Rent's extension made sense because it extended for the summer months when the show was bound to have decent numbers.

I was thinking the exact same thing. late January and Feb is not the time to extend a show that isn't selling enough tickets in September.

It'll extend if it starts making money again. It's not that hard to figure out.
