From Playbill.com:

"Although Rob Marshall had been mentioned as a possible director for the upcoming film of the Tony-winning musical Hairspray, Variety reports the deal with the director of the Academy Award-winning 'Chicago' film has fallen through.

The industry paper says the hunt for someone to helm the film, which may begin shooting in early 2006, continues."

Any ideas on who would be a good director? At first I figured, just let John Waters do it...but I'm not so sure of how good he is at staging musical numbers.

Hmmm...who else?

Since when does the director stage musical numbers? Isn't that the choreographer's job? No matter who they get, the film will not better John Waters' original. Just let John do it.

I just figured the director would be doing it for this film because Jack O'Brien and Jerry Mitchell were going to be co-directors and I'm sure Mitchell was going to helm the musical staging.

Then when Marshall was rumored to direct, I figured he'd be staging the musical numbers as he did with CHICAGO.

But you're right...the director doesn't HAVE to stage the numbers.

I don't care who is involved in the film. AS LONG AS KELLY OSBORNE DOESN'T PLAY TRACY!!! That would be the most awful thing imagineable!

I am sure John Waters wouldn't even want to direct it.
They will get a hired gun. Probably the guy who did Austin Powers or someone like that.

My vote is Scott Wittman, with a little help from John Waters.

I actually think that Rob ASHFORD (of Thoroughly Modern Millie fame) would do a nice job. His dances in Beyond the Sea were fantastic.

How about someone who will have Matty as Link? re: HAIRSPRAY movie still needs a director. I would really want a director that wouldn't take the entire movie and stick a bunch of "famous people" in the lead roles.

How about just not making it? If they can't find a great director who's passionate about the project, then the project isn't worthwhile.

I doubt it'd ever happen, but I think Mike Nichols would do an awesome job with it

Yes that's me. No, it's not a Rent homage.
