Hedwig is the kind of experience which is enjoyed in an intimate setting. You should be kind of close to the stage, and Hedwig, to really get full impact. Hedwig is delivering his lines as if he's speaking to you in a casual setting. Not in a large broadway house where people in the mezz and balcony may very well feel totally separated from the event.
And yes, the above remarks are my opinion, but I'm in the position to base them on the experience I had with the show.
That being said (I hate that phrase, lol) I wish the show all the success is has always enjoyed and hope it does work out on broadway somehow. It has been more than just a show for me.
I agree with JRB, as usual. I couldn't be more excited for this. Circle would be perfect with some added floor seats, or even the Belasco. Both would be perfect for some Rocky Horror digs. I hope this happens, and even if it just happens long enough for us Hedwig fans, ones who saw it with JCM or discovered it later, to see it. Oh just keep Alley Sheedy away this time....yuck!
It seems most of you posters did not even read the article.
They are not taking the show and plopping it in a huge Broadway house.
They are writing new material and adapting the show for Broadway,
If you saw the brilliant way John adapted the show into a movie you might have more faith that they know what they are doing.
I read every word.
I simply disagree with your assertion, Jane.
The show is large enough in scope, themes and score to fill a small to midsized Broadway house.
I was fortunate enough to see Kiki and Herb back in the day at Fez. It was an awesome experience. I also was fortunate to see them at Carnegie Hall. They lost none of their edge nor their effectivness. Because, on some level, Kiki is large enough to fill whatever the space. I feel the same about JCM as Hedwig.
That's fine, son of Robbie J. I respect all opinions. there's no such thing as a wrong one.
I think I'm just genuinely surprised that you, with all of the intimate knowledge you have of the show, think it can only be played in an 'intimate' space.

Hedwig is a rock concert. I saw REM in a small club (500 seats) and thought they could NEVER have the same impact in a big stadium. I was wrong.
I think Hedwig, in a midsized theater, with cabaret seating on the main floor would be great- especially if they served drinks during.
What can I say? What can anyone say about the way they feel about something? It just is.
Whatever "is" is!

No No No Jane we DO NOT TOLERATE DISSENT once we decide the rigth answer!
Teasing, of course. I am curious to see how it goes. I will say I want to see it, but I do not expect it to run long or turn a profit.
Joe, that's how I felt about ROA-it's a rock concert. I don't feel that way about Hedwig.I can't compare it to a pop group like REM. Hedwig has quite a story and because the way it was written originally, it DOES take place in a smaller and dumpier venue than a broadway house.
Since there will be rewrites, maybe JCM will change the tone of the piece to fit the house.
I'm very excited about this. New Stephen Trask songs and the opportunity to see John Cameron Mitchell as Hedwig live . . . that's kickass.
Best news all year !!!! Went to Jane St every weekend for years !
Show is so briliant ! I just hope they dont mess with it too much.

I just watched the film & my god that was wonderful. I am really looking forward to this.
Such great news. JCM came to my college a year before I was there which made me insanely jealous how nonchalantly my friends mentioned it to me once.
I now know what show to bring my mother to this fall. The film version was so wonderful.

While I loved just about every Hedwig at the Jane Street theater, Cerveris was my favorite. I could definitely see this at Circle in the Square or the Belasco.
Is anything currently booked to go into CIRCLE?

I know it's early, but is it safe to say that John will get a TONY nod next season for best actor?
I love the idea of a revival of Hedwig, especially starring its creator. But I do have reservations about it being in a Broadway sized house. I don't have doubts about the source material and the performances working in one of the smaller Broadway houses, it just doesn't feel like that type of show to me.
I remember a few years ago when they were talking about bringing it back and the venue of choice with the Zipper Theatre, which I felt would have been a perfect marriage of show and venue, it's a shame that it has since closed or I would have voted to play it there rather than on Broadway.
Either way I will totally be there, no matter where it plays, it's one of my favorite shows.
You're thinking old!Hedwig, not movie!Hedwig or new!Hedwig.
The old version was very much a tiny, intimate one-man show. The film, however, expanded the cast of characters and locations into a slightly surreal jaunt through Middle America. We've been told that, if nothing else, the show is being revised and expanded. Expanded could mean length and amount of material, or it could mean an "outward expansion" to make the show less intimate, somewhat larger in scope.
Could Hedwig work as a spectacle? Maybe not a huge excess of one, but we saw how the movie did, and that striking visual sense could translate well to the stage.

I wonder if Andrea Martin's role will be included in the new show.
I wouldn't count on a" PhyllisStein" on the stage, lol
It's very possible. And would be an exciting evolution for the musical.
