People think I'm crazy for finding SITPWG boring.

re: Hair

I've been thinking about this thread all day. i'm struck that this entire topic has not been approached before. See the New Yorker review: http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/theatre/2009/04/13/090413crth_theatre_als. i'm also a little surprised as this is an open forum, some comments being so defensive and at times downright nasty-this love thread isn't always so loving! From the outset, i can't wait to see this production. everything i have seen, heard and read about this production seems that it is a definitive interpretation of the original. That said!! it is not the original. its 40 years later and believe me things were different. i saw the OBC and worked at the theatre for 9 months where the Chicago cast played. i'm sorry it was grittier than. My God, ny was so different than. In that production, there were no wigs, costumes as stated, all the time. i saw cast members arrive 5 minutes before curtain and go on stage as they were. i saw the interview w/ Rado re: going for no Broadway types- true .also, the interview w/ Rado talking to Creel and Swenson about opening night and gettin shots of B-12 or such.those 2 were incredulous. The orig cast were not chorus people. I was asked to go on tour based on my look, my demeanor. I dare say there is less a hookup/drug scene in this current cast then in the 60's-70's. ( See Lorrie Davis' book). It does not mean one is better or worse. Its not like reviving Gypsy. Still, I cant wait to see this one, and the talent and design looks amazing. Its very cathartic for me. However, it was a whole different scene.

Perhaps next you shall mope your way through a carnival, complaining of a lack of things to do.

I can understand people not liking Hair. But finding it boring?

re: Hair

Consider this as a possible reason that people found Hair boring:
Some people simply do not know how to critique a production. For example, if a show is two hours of fun, but turns serious in the end, people without fail call it "sad" or "depressing". People often don't know the difference between one part of the show and the whole show. As far as Hair goes, I love it, but do find much of the second act flawed and boring. The drug trip sequence is dry in my opinion. It is possible that people were bored by a section or a few songs of Hair, and their take on it is "boring". Just a possibility...

re: Hair

I didn't like HAIR in the park with either Groff or Hanke. I don't like the score (save for a couple of songs) and I despise the book (if you can even call it a book). I also think the Broadway cast is far inferior to the cast in the park (luckily Will Swenson and Megan Lawrence are still there, as they are the only ones with any kind of characterization). And yes, I was bored throughout this entire Broadway production...in fact, I couldn't wait for it to end.

I'm glad that others are enjoying it though, and it will win Best Revival on Sunday, so good for them. I much preferred WEST SIDE STORY, but I am clearly in the minority on this one.

re: Hair

I really don't understand that if you were bored in the park why did you see the show 2 more times? To call the park cast superior is strange as the Broadway cast is the same as the park cast with the exception of 3 people.....

re: Hair

I saw the show in the park twice to see both Groff and Hanke's take on the lead role (because every time there is a cast change, I see the show again).

I thought Creel was worse than both of his predecessors...and I also disliked Sasha Allen and Cassie Levy.

re: Hair

Well that is the exact mirror image of my experience, I saw Groff three times in the park and Hanke twice. I thought that of the two Hanke was superior. He lacked some of Groff's singing ability but he made up for it with his acting. Groff, I felt, never understood the character he was playing.
Then came Greel, who I feel nailed it for me. I also feel that the show has only improved since the park, the cast adding a little more dimension to their characters. Sorry you were bored to tears, I know how unpleasant that is after sitting through the current revival of West Side Story. I could barely make it through the second act of that and a revisit for me, is not too likely.

edited to add: I am a big fan of WSS, just not this production.

re: Hair

I saw it the 22nd, and while I wouldn't say I was "bored" I was certainly not as enraptured as those around appeared to be.

I had heard from a couple of friends on this board that in their opinions, without the big "everyone come up and dance with us" thing after curtain call, they had doubts that people would be loving it as much. I left after the primary curtain call but before the everyone dance thing because I had to meet someone and was still unenthralled. However, my friend who had bought us the tickets and had given me permission to leave at intermission and said in fact that he would have had he not had a "friend" in the cast DID stay and all of a sudden it went from "this isn't that good" to "I want to see it again!" I'm inclined to believe that theory. At least to a degree.

re: Hair

I fist saw the show twice in the park and never got to see the Flesh Failures due to rain . The audience both times left the theatre on the same high. I don't think the dance party at the end necessarily changes ones opinion of the show. It will though enhance the experience.
Then again there are shows that people are (were) raving about that I could barely sit through one performance of. Both Spring Awakening and Next to Normal had me eyeing the exit well before curtain call.
